The last time these two teams met, Illawarra came out victors in a frenetic contest (96-88). AJ Ogilvy was monstrous for the Hawks, who collected 36 points and 11 rebounds in the win.
The Hawks have dropped two of their last five games but find themselves fourth in the rankings heading down the home stretch of the season (7-6). Illawarra have been one of the league’s premier offensive teams, excelling in the motion offence and run and gun style. Illawarra will be feeling confident about this match up, and will have the home crowd behind them.
The Taipans have been sub par for much of the season. Their inconsistent play on both ends of the floor has dented any expectations of post season action, and it would appear that Cairns is essentially rounding out the numbers.
Although Cairns show flashes of talent, they have been unable to get going this season. Markel Starks, who was a prized recruit in the offseason, has often been a barometer for the Taipans. If he plays well, Cairns play well.
Unfortunately for Cairns, Starks consistency has mirrored the performance of his team, and if he is unable to find his shot early in this one, it’s conceivable that a blow-out may occur.
Prediction: Starks will have a big night, Cairns to cause the upset.
