The New Zealand-Sri Lanka Test series has had its fair share of strange moments and Doug Bracwell added to the list on Day 1 of the second Test.

On a green Hamilton pitch, Bracewell got the ball to jag back into Sri Lankan opener Kusal Mendis.

There was a loud wooden snick sound when the ball passed the bat, leading to a vociferous appeal.

It took a few moments for the Black Cap fielders to realise that the ball had actually cannoned into the off stump on its way through to the keeper.

Replays showed the bail move appreciably, sliding along the stump before settling back into the stump groove.

Mendis couldn’t make the most of his fortune, eventually caught behind for 31 as Sri Lanka made it to lunch two wickets down.
