Jarryd Hayne could be squeezed out of playing the San Francisco 49ers’ season finale against the St Louis Rams.

The 49ers announced on Saturday they have activated another running back, Mike Davis, from the injured reserve list.

It gives the 49ers four running back options for Sunday’s (Monday 8.30am AEDT) game at Levi’s Stadium with Hayne, Davis, DuJuan Harris and Kendall Gaskins.

The team usually takes three into each game and coach Jim Tomsula said earlier in the week he would like to play Davis.

Gaskins appears to be the likely running back to miss out, although the 49ers have made unpredictable decisions during their dismal 11-loss, four-win season.

Hayne and Harris took more snaps and earned more yards than Gaskins last weekend against the Detroit Lions.

Tomsula has said previously he could take just two running backs, or possibly four, into a game.

Hayne was the surprise starter in Detroit, with Tomsula explaining the Australian was the most suitable option for the opening plays the 49ers had drawn up.

Davis broke his hand two months ago and practiced with the team all week.

He has been impotent in the five games he played this season, averaging just one yard on 25 carries.

Hayne has averaged 3.1 yards on 17 carries in his seven games; Harris had a strong debut last week with an average of 6.6 yards on 11 carries; while Gaskins has averaged 2.4 yards on 16 carries in eight games.

The 49ers will likely wait until 45 minutes before kickoff to announce the 46 players to take on the Rams.
