Can Marcel Granollers send American tenth seed John Isner out of the Australian Open in a shock upset? Join The Roar for live scores from 11am (AEDT).

American tenth seed John Isner hasn’t had the most desired start to the new calendar year with it becoming apparent the American has struggled recently since making an early exit at Vienna back in October 2015.

Isner began the new year with a win over compatriot Sam Querrey in three sets at Auckland before he exited in his next match at the hands of Roberto Bautista Agut during the quarterfinals.

Isner seems to have regained his form which saw him finish 2015 on a high with a win over world No.3 Roger Federer at Paris, after he defeated Jerzy Janowicz in straight sets 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

The American could find it hard to keep up with his opponent Marcel Granollers having had little preparation going into the first grand slam of the year. However, he remains the favourite to win their second round tie.

Marcel Granollers began his Australian Open campaign with a win over Aussie Matthew Ebden during the first round in four sets 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.

The Spaniard started the year with a loss during the first round of the Chennai Open in three sets after putting in a great performance against eventual runner-up Borna Coric.

After an unsuccessful tournament in India, Granollers headed to Australia to compete at Canberra on the Challenger tour before being eliminated in the semi-finals by Italian Paolo Lorenzi, who went on to defeat Ivan Dodig in the final.

During his Canberra campaign he managed to beat Quentin Halys, Maverick Banes and Blake Mott.

The odds are heavily stacked against Granollers. However, he is not expected to give up easily and should be a real challenge for world No.11 John Isner despite them being a massive 69 ranks apart on the ATP World Tour.

The two have played each other only once with the meeting coming on hard court back in 2008 at Washington with Isner winning in three sets 6-3, 6-7, 7-6.

The winner will play eighteenth seed Feliciano Lopez or Guido Pella in the third round.

Prediction
Marcel Granollers will push the match to five sets but Isner will eventually prevail and send the Spaniard out of the Australian Open.

Isner in five sets.
