American John Isner will have to defy history if he hopes to conquer David Ferrer and reach the Australian Open quarter-finals. Join The Roar for live scores from 6:30pm (AEDT).

Having defeated Feliciano Lopez in the last round, Isner will have to produce another top-level performance to get past another Spaniard in the fourth round.

Despite possessing arguably the biggest serve on the ATP tour, Isner comes in today’s match against Ferrer with a 6-1 losing record against the former French Open finalist.

Ferrer is yet to drop a set in the tournament, and was impressive in a straight-sets win over American Steve Johnson. The No.8 seed is one of the finest competitors in the men’s game and few on the ATP tour can compete with Ferrer’s intensity for extended periods.

While Isner may possess the bigger serve and heavier groundstrokes, Ferrer has the American covered when it comes to court coverage, return of serve and competitive attitude.

If the American hopes to register just his second win over Ferrer, he must serve well and keep rallies short.

Ferrer meanwhile, will look to turn this into a battle of heart and guts. If Isner is forced to engage in lengthy rallies, chances are Ferrer will dictate proceedings with his forehand.

Isner has shown on previous occasions that he possesses the firepower to win a set against Ferrer. The key issue for him however will be to maintain his high level for the majority of time he is on court.

With Ferrer such a consistent and professional performer, it is difficult to bet against the Spaniard. Isner will prove to be his most difficult challenge yet, but Ferrer should progress to the Australian Open quarter-finals.
