The water bottle came loose from a fan's backpack and struck the tennis champion in the head.
Shuai Zhang will look to continue her remarkable run at the Australian Open when she takes on the big-hitting Madison Keys. Join The Roar for live scores from 9pm (AEDT).
No player has had a bigger impact on the women’s draw than Zhang, who caused a major upset by defeating No.2 seed Simona Halep in the first round.
The Chinese qualifier had a poor record against Halep but it did not deter her from causing the upset of the tournament thus far.
Zhang has played some impressive tennis at the Australian Open that defies her ranking, and she is in good enough form to continue her run into the quarter-finals.
Keys meanwhile showed tremendous fight to come from a set and a break down to defeat former French Open champion Ana Ivanovic in a quality match.
The American was in trouble in the second set as she struggled to find her range with her serve and backhand. Eventually, Keys raised her game to break Ivanovic’s serve while 4-2 down in the second set, and she survived some tough games to progress in three tight sets.
Keys has lost the opening set in her past two matches, and can ill-afford another slow start against a player high on confidence.
At her best, Keys should overpower Zhang, but the American’s slow starts mean another three setter could well be on the cards. Although the women’s draw has been filled with upsets, one favours Keys to still progress to the quarter-finals.
