Argentinian football referee César Flores was shot dead during a game by a player he had sent off with a red card, police have confirmed.

The incident took place in Campo de la Ribera, the provincial capital of Cordoba, Argentina on Sunday. Flores sent the player off for flooring an opponent.

The player left the field and took a gun from his backpack, then charged back onto the field while the game was still in play.

He fired at Flores three times shooting him in the head, chest and neck, and also shot another player, Walter Zárate, in the chest.

Zárate was rushed to hospital but his wounds are not believed to be life-threatening.

“It all happened during the match,” said a police spokesman. “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”

The assailant fled the scene of the crime and is currently at large.
