Scotland will have to defy history if they hope to register a win in the Six Nations against France for the first time since 2006. Join The Roar for live scores from 2am AEDT.

A win over Italy two weeks ago ended Scotland’s nine-match losing streak in the Six Nations and they will be keen to secure another rare win at Murrayfield this afternoon.

The French have enjoyed great success against the Scots in recent years, winning 17 of their past 18 matches. France though would be fools to think that they have today’s contest already won.

Scotland approaches this game quietly confident of causing the upset. The French are yet to hit top gear despite registering wins over Ireland and Italy thus far in the Six Nations.

A narrow defeat to Wales though has hurt France’s chances of perhaps winning the Six Nations so the pressure is on Guy Noves’ men to get back into the winner’s circle.

Scotland has made it clear this week that they intend to pressure France with high-intensity play. In theory it makes sense but putting such play into practice is another story.

If last year’s Rugby World Cup proved anything, it’s the fact that southern hemisphere teams such as the All Blacks, Wallabies, Springboks and Pumas set the standard when it comes to playing with speed.

Scotland meanwhile continues to be a team that occasionally produces the odd upset that is offset by consistent defeats.

If Scotland hopes to take the next step in their rugby evolution, they need to simply play the percentages well and then go for the throat when in good field position instead of going for three points.

If they can take a chance in attacking field position instead of falling back on goal kicking, then the Scots will learn to develop the confidence required to attack the very best teams in the world.

Prediction
An upset is certainly on the cards today for Scotland but whether or not they win largely depends on their ability to combat a strong French pack and attack effectively when in good field position. Do that and they can win.
