Match result:

Geelong get home by 69 points against a spirited Brisbane Lions side. They played well today the Cats, and could have taken it out by an even greater margin had they kicked straight.

REPORT: CATS THRASH LIONS

Hawkins kicked four, Kersten and Dangerfield three apiece whilst Selwood racked up the disposals all over the park.

The Lions worked hard but at the end of the day, they were off the pace from the word go. They weren’t at all helped by the absences of Rich and Rockliff.

Final score
Geelong 18.17.125
Brisbane 7.14.56

It’s been a topsy-turvy start for Geelong in 2016. After claiming the scalp of the reigning premiers Hawthorn in round one thanks to a huge performance from debutant Patrick Dangerfield, the Cats crashed back down to Earth with a 13-point surprise loss to GWS in Canberra.

Round 3 brings a home clash with the seldom-fancied Brisbane Lions, a game which should bring consolidation to a Geelong line-up who seem eager to make their mark this season.

The Lions head to Melbourne in a seriously depleted state. Captain Tom Rockliff will be a massive exclusion from the side following a calf injury whilst the continued absence of Dayne Beams will no doubt do no favours to a side who are fighting to avoid a 0-3 start to their campaign. Mitch Robinson returns to the side this week, albeit surrounded by question marks over his fitness.

Brisbane’s midfield is seriously understaffed and add to that the class and experience of Geelong’s men in the middle personified by the likes of Jimmy Bartel, Joel Selwood and Patrick Dangerfield – we could have a cricket score on our hands. Jordan Murdoch is the only omission for the Cats following a bout of soreness.

History suggests Geelong should have no problem getting home in this one. The Cats have won each of their last four clashes with the Lions as well as eight of the last nine – four of them by over 50 points.

All the stats are on Geelong’s side here, it doesn’t look to be much of a contest. The bookies back up this sentiment with the Cats a laughably slender $1.04 to go home with maximum points. Their visiting opponents meanwhile can be backed at a long $11.

Prediction: Cats by 65
