The Waratahs have the important win, taking down the Cheetahs by 15 points to shoot closer to the top of the Australian conference with their third win in a row.
REPORT: WARATAHS GET IT DONE AGAINST CHEETAHS
The Cheetahs were all over the place tonight and end their Australian tour with three losses from as many games.
The Tahs were never really in trouble of losing the game but they just made a mess of the game, struggling to get the result they probably should have had.
Credit to the Cheetahs though who fought their hearts out to stay in the game and battle the home side till the final whistle.
Final score
Waratahs 21
Cheetahs 6
The Waratahs will play host to the Cheetahs tonight with a chance to jump atop the Australian conference. Catch all the thrilling highlights and live scores coming out of Allianz stadium from 7:45pm (AEST) on The Roar.
The Tahs are coming in off the back of a big upset win over the South African Conference leaders, the Stormers.
A late Michael Hooper try and subsequent Bernard Foley conversion on the stroke of full time got the NSW side home by just two points to put them within striking distance of the Rebels at the pointy end of the ladder.
The Cheetahs, on the other hand, have slumped to a pair of losses on the trot to Aussie sides after their record 92-17 win over the Sunwolves in Week 8.
Interestingly, the Cheetahs have won three of their last four encounters with the Waratahs, despite being on the wrong side of six losses from ten games.
Team News:
Under fire coach Daryl Gibson has made just the single change to his side for this week, welcoming the return of Tatafu Polota-Nau to the starting lineup, putting him just three games shy of Phil Waugh’s most Waratah caps record of 132.
23-year old hooker Hugh Roach will shift to the reserves to make way for the veteran Polota-Nau.
For the Cheetahs, skipper Francois Venter has made his way back into the starting lineup after missing last week’s loss to the Reds with a calf injury.
Venter will slot in at inside centre against the Tahs tonight.
Neither side are short of strike weapons coming into the fixture, with Israel Folau and Sergeal Petersen sharing second spot on the leading try scorers list so far, just one behind the leader (Damian McKenzie – 7) at six a piece.
Prediction:
With the kiwis flying out front and taking all the wildcard spots, the only way for the Tahs to make the finals is to top the Australian conference.
Now they’re within reach, it’s hard to imagine they’ll let the opportunity go against a struggling Cheetahs side that’s had a rough tour across the country.
