Melbourne United has won the bidding war for former NBL MVP Cedric Jackson, securing the American point guard on a two-year deal.
Jackson, who was part of the New Zealand Breakers outfit that eliminated United in last season’s semi-finals, will add a winning mentality to Melbourne’s backcourt – having won three NBL titles during his time with the Breakers.
The 2014-15 grand final series MVP, who was in demand by a number of clubs both in Australia and overseas, credited head coach Dean Demopoulos as being the catalyst for his joining United.
“We had a quick conversation after the first round of the play-offs and I picked his brain a little bit,” Jackson said on Tuesday.
“We then caught up again during the off-season in the US and we had a good conversation.
“He had a good vibe about him as a person and coach.”
Jackson, who averaged a league-best 6.3 assists per game for the Breakers last season, will replace Stephen Holt in manning the point for United.
“His experience in playing big games along with his outstanding skill set in the point guard position will prove invaluable for us,” Melbourne chief executive Vince Crivelli said.
United officials remain in talks with Boomers squad member Chris Goulding about a new deal, with the franchise hoping to retain the sharp-shooter to form what would arguably be the most dangerous backcourt in the NBL.
