Hawthorn’s General Manager of Football Operations, Chris Fagan, spoke to the media following the announcement that star key forward Jarryd Roughead was battling a recurrence of melanoma.

Roughead will be sidelined indefinitely while undergoing treatment for the next 3-4 months; his likelihood of returning to the football field after that is currently unclear.

“He’s had one previous (scan), and everything was all clear,” Fagan stated.

“This time around there are a few spots of cancer to be seen on the scan. Obviously, that means there has to be a medical intervention going forward.

“He got that opportunity post-training today. He stood in front of the group and told them everything that had happened.

“It was quite an emotional time for Rough and for the boys, but he was determined to let them know and to also let them know that he was going to be okay.”

Roughead was expected to return from a knee injury in the coming weeks, but his return date to the field is now the least of the concerns for both him and the Hawthorn Football Club.
