Match preview:

The Essendon Bombers will be looking to pull off an upset for the ages when they host top four contenders the Greater Western Sydney Giants at Etihad Stadium. Join us on The Roar from 4:40pm (AEST) to follow all of the action.

Despite sitting in sixth spot on the ladder, the Greater Western Sydney Giants are only one win back from the Cats in second spot. After losses to Adelaide and Geelong, the Giants bounced back in emphatic fashion with a big win over their cross-town rivals the Sydney Swans and will be full of confidence facing a far weaker Essendon side.

With the top eight teams only separated by a couple of wins, percentage could play a crucial role come September and this is a great chance for Leon Cameron’s men to capitalise with a big score.

2016 has been all about developing Essendon’s younger players, and while the Bombers have been struggling on the scoreboard, they’ve also unearthed some great young talents like Darcy Parish and Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti.

But with big losses coming week after week, fatigue is going to be a factor as they try to stay competitive for the second half of the season. The Bombers are winless since their early-season victory over Melbourne, and are currently rooted to the bottom of the ladder.

With all of this mind, John Worsfold will need to be at his creative best in the coaches box to give Essendon a chance.

With a lack of key position players one of Essendon’s main weaknesses this season, the Giants big forwards Jeremy Cameron, Johnathan Patton and Rory Lobb will be looking for to hit the scoreboard.

Despite the Bombers claiming four victories from their last five games against GWS, things are vastly different in 2016 so prior head to head records won’t exactly give the Bombers much reason for hope.

Prediction
The Giants are coming off a big win over the Swans and the hard and fast conditions of Etihad Stadium will enable them to play some quality football that will be too good for the Bombers to handle.

Giants by 60+.
