A massive weekend of sport is done, and Monday morning has arrived again – what a shame! To get you through these difficult times, why not take a look at the big moments of the weekend past?

Super Rugby

With a few weeks left before Super Rugby finals begin, this week saw some vital matches won or lost to determine who will go through and who won’t.

The Lions absolutely steam-rolled the Sharks in their match finishing with a 37-10 scoreline and in doing so became the first team to officially qualify beyond doubt for the 2016 finals.

The Brumbies and the Waratahs both took big wins this weekend over the Reds and the Sunwolves respectively, and both remain in the hunt for finals action. One of them will surely make it through as the top team in the Australian conference, but which?

At the moment the Brumbies look the better option – they’re narrowly ahead right now and have matches against the Blues and the Force in the next two weeks, while the Waratahs play the Hurricanes and the Blues. Of course, both sides can still make it through if the second-placed one performs well enough to grab a wildcard spot.

The Reds match also famously saw the debut of a 135kg cult hero – the ‘Tongan Thor’, Taniela Topou, who had a number of eye-catching moments including a try on debut.

The Jaguares also got just their third win in franchise history on the weekend, defeating the Bulls 29-11 on home soil.

AFL

The most exciting aspect of this weekend for AFL fans was probably the end of the bye rounds, that said, Saturday saw a classic match played out at the SCG between the Sydney Swans and the Western Bulldogs.

It had every that great matches have – tight margins, regular lead changes, thrilling individual performances and clutch moments, the most notable being Jason Johannisen’s excellent set shot goal with just seconds left on the clock to take the lead and win the game.

The week also saw the Gold Coast Suns break their streak of ten consecutive losses by taking a forty-point win over the St Kilda Saints – rather a poor turn from St Kilda after impressing so much with a big win over Geelong a fortnight ago.

NRL

The Cronulla Sharks made some history on the weekend taking their twelfth consecutive win, this week over the Parramatta Eels, and confirming their spot on top of the NRL ladder.

The match saw Semi Radradra return to play for the Eels but he struggled to have much of an impact. A rare highlight for the Eels this season however was the form of fourth-gamer Bevan French.

The Broncos are finding themselves the target of some hard questions after they copped a savage beating from the Melbourne Storm on Friday night, going down 48-6.

However the match of the round surprisingly was between the Canberra Raiders and the struggling Newcastle Knights. The Knights got off to a fast start that left the Raiders scrambling to equalise in time for a golden point finish, which eventually saw Canberra win the match thanks to missed-field-goal-come-try by Jordan Rapana.

The round also saw the Tigers upset the Panthers 34-26 with James Tedesco pushing his case to be named in the NSW Blues side for Origin 3. In other Blues news, it was reported that selector Bob Fulton will step down from his role when the series ends.

Euro 2016

This weekend saw the four Euro 2016 quarter-finals played, with some of the results coming as big surprises, and some of them less so.

The biggest sort of the lot without a doubt was Wales’ 3-1 win over Belgium – a remarkable story given this has been Wales’ first major tounament in more than half a century, while Belgium are Europe’s top-ranked side.

Germany also made some history with a win over Italy, their first every victory over the Italians at a major competition. They could not be split during the match but the Germans eventually won 6-5 on penalties.

Portugal knocked out Poland on penalties and will play Wales in a semi-final, while France brought the Iceland fairytale to an end 5-2 and will play Germany.

Wimbledon

The biggest news of the weekend at Wimbledon was the shock exit of Novak Djokovic, defeated in four sets by American Sam Querrey.

That brought to an end a record of 30 consecutive wins by Djokovic, as well as his dream of completing a calendar grand slam in 2016.

Stan Wawrinka was also knocked out of the tournament by Juan Martin del Potro, which means two of the top four mens seeds are already gone before the fourth round.

Andy Murray is now the favourite to win the men’s singles – and he takes on Australia’s Nick Kyrgios tonight, who had wins over Dustin Brown and Feliciano Lopez on the weekend.

Murray knocked out Australian John Millman in the third round, but Bernard Tomic is still alive, set to play Lucas Pouille tonight.

Serena Williams continues to progress through the field in the women’s singles, knocking out Christina McHale and Annika Beck over the weekend, and is the clear favourite to win the women’s title.
