In what should prove to be one of the better fourth round matches at the US Open, 14th seed Petra Kvitova looks to build on her form and cause a big upset against Angelique Kerber. Join The Roar for live scores from 9am (AEST).

In a match of two top half seeds, especially in what has become an incredibly unpredictable women’s draw, you can never quite be sure about the way it is going to play out.

Kerber has been in strong form right throughout the season and is the number two seed for a reason. With her results at grand slams this year, which included winning the Australian Open and a final loss at Wimbledon, she has well and truly stamped herself as one of the best players on the circuit.

Her recent form leading into the US Open has been strong as well, going down to Monica Puig in the gold medal match at Rio, before putting on a strong showing at Cincinnati.

Since the US Open started, she has been clinical and methodical, not dropping a single set and barely ever looking challenged.

Every element of her game has been firing and in only one set out of six has she been taken to a tie-breaker. Her third round match saw a dismantling of Catherine Bellis 6-1, 6-1.

Kvitova, on the other hand, won the bronze medal in Rio after a relatively poor second round showing at Wimbledon. Defeating Madison Keys in that match was a massive confidence boost moving forward before she was knocked out at New Haven in the semi-finals by Agnieszka Radwanska.

Like Kerber though, she hasn’t lost a set at the US Open and has barely had to raise an effort in doing so. Her third round match was shaping up as more of a challenge, but she cruised home 6-3, 6-4 against fellow seeded player Elina Svitolina.

The pair have faced off on eight occasions, with the ledger split at four matches apiece. Five of those have been on the hard court, with Kvitova winning three while the last two have been on clay and both won by Kerber.

The winner of this match will go on to play either Roberta Vinci or Lesia Tsurenko.

Prediction
Hard to say exactly who is going to get the better of this match. Kerber has been in fantastic form, but Kvitova’s win against Svitolina has to mean something. Can’t see an upset though.

Kerber in three sets.
