College football’s first week of action featured some big scores, a couple of tight games and a few upsets along the way.

No. 1 Alabama throttled No. 20 USC 52-6. Jalen Hurts threw two touchdowns while running for two more, and Blake Barnett completed five of six for 100 yards and a score. Damien Harris ran for 138 yards on nine carries and ArDarius Stewart caught four passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns.

No. 3 Oklahoma suffered a tough loss to No. 15 Houston 33-23, as both quarterbacks put on a show. For the Sooners, Baker Mayfield was 24 of 33 with 323 yards and three touchdowns. For the Cougars, Greg Ward Jr completed 23 passes on 40 attempts, notching 321 yards and two scores. The main recipient of the air attack was Steven Dunbar, who finished with 125 yards on seven catches.

No. 4 Florida State managed to win a tough game against No. 11 Ole Miss 45-34. The Rebels quarterback Chad Kelly finished with 313 yards and four touchdowns, but with three interceptions to go along with that great stat line, his team were going to find it hard to win, especially when the game was played in Orlando.

Evan Engram caught nine passes for 121 yards and a touchdown in the losing effort.

For the Seminoles, they had it working on all fronts. Freshman quarterback Deondre Francais delivered spectacularly, completing 33 of 52 en route to a 419-yard, two-touchdown performance. It didn’t hurt that he added 59 yards on nine carries as well. It’s no surprise that Jesus Wilson put up 125 yards on nine catches, while running back Dalvin Cook had seven catches and 101 yards.

Wisconsin downed No. 5 LSU 16-14, despite Leonard Fournette’s 23 carry, 138 yard effort for the Tigers. Troy Fumagalli caught seven passes for 100 yards for the Badgers. In other upset news, Texas Aandamp;M defeated No. 16 UCLA 31-24 in overtime from 239 yards and two rushing touchdowns from quarterback Trevor Knight. Bruins quarterback Josh Rosen threw for 343 yards, but his three interceptions doomed them. Kenneth Walker III caught 115 yards and a score off six catches for UCLA.

No. 6 Ohio State delivered big over Bowling Green, winning 77-10. quarterback J.T. Barrett made history by scoring seven touchdowns in a single game, the first player to do so in a Buckeyes uniform. Six of those scores came by way of the passing game, as he finished with 349 yards, while another came on the ground. Ohio State put up over 700 yards of total offense on the strength of RB Mike Weber (19 carries, 136 yards) and WR Curtis Samuel (9 receptions, 177 yards, two touchdowns).

No. 7 Michigan delivered a beatdown of Hawaii, destroying the Rainbow Warriors 63-3 after they lost to California in Sydney. The quarterbacks were accurate all day for the Wolverines – Wilton Speight was 10 of 13 with three touchdowns and an interception, Shane Morris was four of four and John O’Korn was three of three. Chris Evans added 112 yards and two scores on the ground off eight carries.

One of the biggest upsets of the week came courtesy of Texas’ win over No. 10 Notre Dame. It took double overtime to finally decide a winner, but the Longhorns hung on against a tough Fighting Irish team for a positive start to their season. Notre Dame quarterback DeShone Kizer threw for five touchdowns, and notched another on the ground off 13 carries and 77 yards, but it wasn’t enough.

For Texas, Shane Buechle threw for 280 yards and two touchdowns, while John Burt caught six passes for 111 yards and a score. D’Onta Foreman managed to gain 131 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries.

No. 13 TCU held out against a strong South Dakota State side, winning 59-41. For the Jackrabbits, Taryn Christian threw 333 yards and three touchdowns, with Isaac Wallace delivering 112 yards and a score off a mere seven carries.

Jake Wieneke finished with two touchdowns and 196 yards off eight catches. Kenny Hill was phenomenal for the Horned Frogs, however, completing 33 of 49 for 439 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. This was in addition to a 45-yard, three-touchdown performance on the ground. Taj Williams caught 11 passes for 158 yards and a score.
