What to look out for in week two of the Pacific Championships
Kiwis assistant coach David Kidwell is expected to be promoted to the top job when the New Zealand Rugby League names Stephen Kearney’s successor on Friday.
The new Kiwis coach will be named by the NZRL at a press conference with Kidwell widely tipped to replace Kearney whose nine-year tenure ended when he was named the new Warriors NRL head coach on Tuesday.
The 39-year-old Kidwell, who played 25 Test for the Kiwis, has been an assistant coach in the NRL with Melbourne Storm and Wests Tigers.
NZRL boss Alex Hayton hinted earlier in the week that Kidwell was in line to replace Kearney.
“The obvious candidate is David Kidwell because he has been the assistant for three years,” Hayton said.
“He’s in the system, he knows the culture and we have had a discussion with David.”
