Recently I’ve written a few articles about A-League expansion and establishing a second division, but today I came across an article about creating a second division in the AFL.

Since I don’t know much about the subject in the AFL I won’t go into too much depth about this but I will have a go at making a very brief pitch to readers to see what they think.

If there was an AFL second division it should start with six teams playing each other four times in the season. The locations I would pick would be Hobart, Launceston, Canberra, North Sydney, Darwin and Auckland.

Hobart and Launceston
Hobart and Launceston each get good attendances for their AFL matches and the four Tasmanian derbies each year during the regular season would be sure to have a great atmosphere.

Canberra
Like Tasmania, Canberra has also been left out and overlooked in favour of the Giants so they should also get a team.

North Sydney
North Sydney Oval is in a good spot and if they got promoted you would have three Sydney teams for the first time in the AFL which might be interesting.

Darwin
Darwin is footy mad and has Marrara Oval which hosts a few AFL regular and preseason matches each year but if would be good if they had their own team to support. They could also take a home match to Alice Springs.

Auckland
New Zealand has 35,000 registered players and had a record attendance of 22,546 in Wellington in an AFL match between St Kilda and Sydney. This year AFL New Zealand established the AFLNZ Premiership contested between four teams in Auckland.

So Auckland would might be a suitable location for a team in an AFL second division.

The main issues with a second division would be whether it is fully professional or just semi-professional and whether or not there would be promotion and relegation between the competitions.

I’ll leave the commentary to Roarers who follow Aussie rules more closely than I do. I’m interested to hear what you think.
