Serie A leaders Juventus lost 3-1 to a Genoa outfit that was keen to capitalise on defensive errors and keep the league title race open.

It was Atletico Madrid’s manager Diego Simeone’s son Giovanni Simeone who inflicted the damage upon the Bianconeri by scoring a double within 13 minutes of the game. It only took three minutes for Genoa to get on the scoresheet from Argentine striker Giovanni Simeone easily dribbling past the unfocused Juventus wall and shooting the ball between the posts after Buffon managed to save three fired shots.

Ten minutes later Simeone struck a double to extend the lead at 2-0. La Vecchia Signora was absolutely stunned once again by Genoa punishing the sleepy defensive work of Alex Sandro which allowed Serbian winger Darko Lazović to easily cross the ball to Simeone who would convert with a powerful header.

In the 29th minute, it couldn’t get any worse for Juve defender Alex Sandro who splashed the ball into his own net by attempting to clear a Luca Rigoni shot. 3-0 inside 30 minutes was like a dream for I Rossoblu and a nightmare disaster for Juventus.

The second half wasn’t about goals galore as Genoa were settling down for the emphatic 3-0 scoreline but it was until the 82nd minute that Juventus would grab one goal back to make the scoreline 3-1 and less embarrassing. The goal came from a Miralem Pjanic world-class free kick that swerved past goalkeeper Mattia Perin.

The Bosnian midfielder always manages to make free kicks look so simple but this time around it was too little too late for Juve to come back and rescue precious points.

This fixture provided an upset that could see the Scudetto title race take a different toll and crown a different champion. Juventus are still sitting on the table at first position with 33 points but this loss has opened the door for fellow rivals like Roma and AC Milan who both sit second and third on 29 points.

With this win, Genoa has pushed themselves up to ninth place with one game in hand.

Now Brazilian defender Dani Alves has managed to walk out of this game with a fractured fibula and add further stress to the Juventus backline. However, Massimiliano Allegri’s men should lift their heads high as Argentine striker Paula Dybala is expected to come back from injury ready to play the in-form Atalanta next weekend.
