Australia assistant coach David Saker says opting for an extra half hour on Sunday night to push for a first Test win over Pakistan in Brisbane “probably wasn’t the right decision”.
Australia received an extra eight overs in the pink ball clash’s day four final session to clinch the three wickets they needed and take a 1-0 lead in the three-Test series.
Instead Pakistan thrashed 51 runs and lost just one wicket to be 8-382 by stumps.
Pakistan are daring to dream of reaching the world record victory target of 490 with defiant No.6 Asad Shafiq (100 not out) at the crease.
Saker admitted he and head coach Darren Lehmann did not want the extra eight overs to be taken on Sunday night.
ICC rules state that umpires can opt for an extra half hour in a push for a result after a captain’s request.
Australian skipper Steve Smith was seen talking to the umpires on what was supposed to be the second last over of the day’s scheduled play.
“I don’t know what happened,” Saker said of the extra time.
“It was a bit frustrating from where we were sitting.
“We were quite happy to come off.
“I thought we’d done quite a bit of work and we’d probably rather our fast bowlers put their feet up.”
Saker said Australia did not have much to gain from an extra half hour with an in-form Shafiq at the crease.
Shafiq was 77 not out before extra time was taken.
“I know the umpires and Steve were talking out there,” Saker said.
“Obviously they’ve just given them the half hour extra which is allowable.
“I suppose with an ‘in’ batter (Shafiq) in, that probably wasn’t the right decision.
“But a lot of people wanted the game to finish today and the umpires are probably one of those.”
