Brownlow Medal night 2018 saw Tom Mitchell awarded the game’s ultimate individual honour, taking home the medal after topping the leaderboard with 28 votes.

When it came to the individual clubs there were a few surprises, but not many.

Steele Sidebottom was one of the surprise packets of the night – he started the day at $51 odds but proved to be Mitchell’s main competitor for the medal.

He ultimately finished with 24 votes for the night, just four shy of equalling Mitchell, and ultimately well ahead of Brodie Grundy who had been seen as Collingwood’s best chance.

However arguably the biggest surprise of the night was that neither Max Gawn nor Clayton Oliver – both considered a chance for the medal – wound up topping the votes for the Melbourne Demons.

Instead it was Angus Brayshaw, who started the year in the VFL if you can believe it, pipping them to be the club leader and third overall with 21 votes.

Brayshaw had never been awarded a Brownlow vote before tonight.

Every club bar two had at least one player in the top twenty of the count.

Essendon were one of the two to miss out, as their leading vote-getter, skipper Dyson Heppell, finished with 13 votes and in 23rd place.

However things were much darker for Gold Coast, who saw Brayden Fiorini and departing free agent Tom J Lynch tie for their most votes with just five each, finishing 82nd overall.
