Lachlan Lewis – who is the nephew of Wally Lewis – debuted on June 30, 2018 against the Knights in Round 16.

He played five-eighth for the Bulldogs with current teammate Jack Cogger playing halfback for the Knights in the same game. Lewis played halfback for most of the 2019 season with Kieran Foran injured, and Foran will miss most of the 2020 season as well with a serious shoulder injury.

Lewis has only played 24 matches across his two-year career with 15 of those coming in 2019 and Lewis’ career overview doesn’t look too bad either: 24 matches for one try, ten try assists, 20 forced drop outs, 578 tackles for only 68 missed tackles, 8278 total kicking metres and a 50/50 win loss ratio (12-12).

What really got him noticed – besides being the nephew of Wally Lewis – is his outstanding defence against some of the big men.

Lewis has everything that you want in a halfback. He’s young, a good defender, very good kicker of the ball and has speed.

In November last year, the Dogs re-signed Lewis until the end of 2021. Lewis will have to be one of the main men in 2020 due to the injury of Foran and also having a young five-eighth partner in Jack Cogger or Brandon Wakeham, who has been reported to play five-eighth come Round 1.

Lachlan Lewis, Brandon Wakeham and Jack Cogger combined only have 64 games of experience, which makes it even more exciting because we get to see more young talent come through and make a name for themselves in the NRL. I would have Jack Cogger at six and Lachlan Lewis at halfback because they played with each other in the halves the most in 2019 and will be wanting to continue that combination.

The Bulldogs’ fans also liked the re-signing of Lachlan Lewis. The Bulldogs finished 12th on the ladder with the same points as the Knights. Their total number of points was the their lowest (326) in the past decade and they had their lowest total of tries (56) in the past decade.

In 2020, Bulldogs fans are hoping to cheer for their team come finals time. Lewis, Cogger, Dallin Watene-Zelezniak, Corey Harawira-Naera, Josh Jackson, Dylan Napa, Will Hopoate, Jeremy Marshall-King and Aiden Tolman will all need to be consistent in 2020 if the Bulldogs are to have any hope of making it into the eight.

I compared Brodie Croft and Lachlan Lewis with each other in 2019 and a few stats popped out at me. Lewis played 15 games for nine try assists, 12 line break assists, 181 kicks for 5242 metres and 12 forced drop outs compared to Brodie Croft, who played 22 games for eight try assists, six line break assists, 149 kicks for 3950 metres and eight forced drop outs. Croft got dropped for Jahrome Hughes, which would’ve limited his stats.

The experience of Jackson, Tolman and Hopoate mixed with young guns like Lewis, and the Bulldogs can be a very dangerous side in 2020. Coach Dean Pay will also be under a lot of pressure this season and will be looking to guide the Bulldogs to their first finals series since their last appearance in 2016.

Lachlan Lewis will be a player to watch out for in 2020.
