Lina Hurtig has equalised for Sweden. It’s now 2-2 with just over 35 minutes remaining

7.36pm
It’s Matildas leading 2-1 now. A second for Kerr and a second with her head. A brilliant bit of skill down the left by Caitlin Foord and her chip is forced home by Kerr.

7.18pm
Sam Kerr has equalised for Australia! The Matildas are 1-1 with Sweden at half time. And the Matildas should have had a penalty as well.

6.50pm
Sweden have taken a 1-0 lead over the Matildas after a tense opening 20 minutes. Rolfo on target for the Swedes, who beat USA 3-0 in their opener.

6.30pm

6.25pm
Richard Carapaz has come away to win the men’s road race for Ecuador, the first cycling medal ever won by that country. There was a sprint finish for the silver and bronze, which went to Wout van Aert (Belgium) and Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia) respectively

6.18pm
Carapaz has jumped ahead of McNulty and has set his sights on the finish. He will have to do it alone

6.17pm
6kms to go and the gap to the chasing pack has shrunk to 16 seconds. This will go down to the wire

6.03pm
Just 20kms to go in the Men’s Road Race, with Brandon McNulty and Richard Carapaz from Ecuador establishing a break of around 20 seconds. Will it be enough?

5.46pm
There are eleven riders in the lead group with 33kms remaining. This is changing minute to minute

5.38pm
Tadej Pogacar (Slovenia), Michael Woods (Canada) and Brandon McNulty (USA) hold an 11 second lead

5.33pm
Only 37kms to go in the men’s road race. 3 riders have broken away. Sadly the Australian cyclists have fallen out of the chase group

5.29pm
Full time and the Australian Stingers have beaten Canada 8-5 in the women’s water polo. With South Africa and Spain also in their group, it was an important win

4.40pm
Its 1-1 between Australia and Canada after the first quarter of the women’s water polo. Elsewhere, there are 68km remaining in the men’s road race. The leading group remain just under 5 minutes ahead of the peloton. We understand Geraint Thomas has retired after an early crash. The 3 Australians, led by Richie Porte, remain with the peloton

4.32
Bronte Halligan has opened the scoring for Australia. Australia 1 Canada 0

4.23pm
The Australian Stingers will play Canada in the women’s water polo, coming up very shortly

4.12pm
95kms to go in the Men’s Road Race and the peloton is starting to drop a few riders during this climb. The lead group is back to a gap of 8 minutes so this is shaping up nicely for an exciting finish. All 3 Australians still in the peloton

4.00pm
Great stuff from Ash Barty and Storm Sanders in the first round of the ladies doubles. They have defeated Japan 6-1 6-2.

3.56pm
Good afternoon all. David Holden here and I’m looking forward to take you through to midnight. Water polo, football and swimming heats just some of the stuff we will be getting through this afternoon and tonight

3:51pm
This is Benjamin Conkey about to sign off for the day session. Thanks for your company. David Holden will take you through the rest of today’s action including the conclusion of this road race.

3:46pm
Worth mentioning the weather in Tokyo and surrounding districts today. It’s having an effect on those Olympians in outdoor sports. It’s 33 degrees in Tokyo and spare a thought for these cyclists who have to deal with that heat plus the humidity from the rain around Mount Fuji. Would not be nice after four hours of cycling. We’ve got around 100kms to go in the men’s road race and the small lead group of five riders is still out in front. Their gap is at 12 minutes as we start the final big climb of the race. You expect that the gap will dwindle by the end of this climb.

3:35pm
Great start by Ash Barty and Storm Sanders who have taken the opening set in the doubles.

3:14pm
We’re on another descent in the men’s road race and thankfully for the riders the wet roads at the top of the climb don’t look as wet on the downhill when they’re doing more than 70kph in places.
We’ve still got a breakaway at the front with five riders: Nicholan Dlamini, Michael Kukrle, Juraj Sagan, Polychronis Tzortzakis and Orluls Alberto Aular Sanabria.

Their lead was 20 minutes but it has been reduced to 14 minutes after the climb. Meanwhile, in tennis Ash Barty is on court in the doubles if you were wondering when she was playing. She’s currently up 2-0 in the first set with her playing partner Storm Sanders.

3:03pm
Have kept one eye on some 3 on 3 basketball. It’s well worth a watch on the 7plus app. I’m a big fan of the 360-degree camera they’re using for the replays. While you can argue that this modified basketball doesn’t belong in the Olympics alongside traditional basketball it is exciting and fast-paced action. No time to think and hardly any stoppages!

2:42pm
Sam Stosur is out of the women’s singles in the tennis after losing in straight sets to Elena Rybakina. Rybakina won 6-4, 6-2 in 70 minutes. While it’s disappointing for Stosur her Olympics is not over with the doubles still to come. She’s going to be playing with Ellen Perez. Speaking of doubles tennis there’s been a pretty big upset with Andy Murray through to the next round with Joe Salisbury. The Brit showing he’s got a bit of life left in him yet!

2:36pm
Big news in the cycling with Great Britain cyclist Geraint Thomas crashing on the first major climb of the men’s road race. Riders were forced to weave around Thomas as he remained on the road. He got back on his bike but it’s a long way to go once you crash. There is 140km left in the race and the five-man breakaway at the front holds a 16-minute lead.

2:17pm
Sam Stosur has lost the first set of her women’s singles opening round in the tennis. Rybakina taking it 6-4. We’re at 1-1 in the second.

2:04pm
The ascents and descents are starting to break up the lead group in the men’s road race. We started with an eight-man breakaway but that’s now down to seven. They’ve pulled out a very handy 20-minute gap over the peloton. Still a long way to go with about 165km of riding but the main group will have to start pulling this gap back soon.

1:51pm
A comfortable 6-3, 6-4 win for John Millman in the tennis against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. Sam Stosur is currently 4-4 in the first set against Elena Rybakina.

1:21pm
Another loss for Australia’s softball team. Canada proving far too strong with a dominant 7-1 win.

1:14pm
Germany has won the men’s eight rowing from the United States. While the Australian team misses out on direct passage to the finals they do get a second chance in the repechage. Meanwhile, in the men’s road race we’re seeing some beautiful scenery as the riders start to climb the hills around Mount Fuji. There’s an eight-man breakaway but the peloton is managing the gap. No one really looking to make a move yet with the best part of 193km to go.

12:50pm
Update from the tennis courts. Australia’s John Millman is currently in action against Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti. Millman has just taken the first set 6-3. Ash Barty doesn’t play singles today but she is in action in the doubles. She’s third up on Court 5 playing with Storm Sanders. Sam Stosur is also in action in the singles and she’ll be playing next on Court 2.

12:40pm
It’s been a good day for Australian rowing with several teams through to the finals. Australia has just won their heats in the men’s and women’s four. It came after the men’s and women’s pairs also won their heats.

Meanwhile, keep this one locked away for those future trivia nights. The first gold medallist at the Tokyo Olympics is Qian Yang who won the Women’s 10m Air rifle.

12:10pm
KOOKABURRAS DEFEAT JAPAN 5-3: Well, that was a struggle by the Aussies but they got the job done. It was an amazing performance by Japan who came back from two goals down to take the lead 3-2. Australia had enough firepower though and their pressure was just too much in the final quarter. There’s not much time to reflect for the Aussies who will be back in action tomorrow night against India.

12:05pm
The men’s road race in cycling is just getting underway with Richie Porte, Lucas Hamilton and Luke Durbridge among Australia’s big chances. Softball update and it’s not looking good for Australia with Canada now up 6-1.

11:53am
The intensity of this hockey game is something else! The Kookaburras finally get another goal after wave after wave of attacking surges. Credit to Japan’s goalkeeper Yoshikawa who kept as many shots out as he could but he couldn’t stop Daniel Beale who fires one home to give Australia a much-needed two-goal cushion with under 10 minutes remaining. Kookaburras 5 Japan 3

11:38am
We’re witnessing one of the most entertaining hockey games in Olympic history with the Kookaburras now up 4-3 after captain Aran Zalewski scored deep into the third quarter. The goal was reviewed by the officials but it got the all-clear. Kookaburras 4-3 Japan

11:32am
An unfortunate moment in softball for the Aussies. A hit by Canada sailed over the head of an outfielder and it gave Canada two runs as a result They’re now up 3-1 against Australia.

11:30am
We’re back on level terms early in the third quarter. Blake Govers scores his 90th international goal with a powerful strike for the Kookaburras from the penalty corner. Kookaburras 3 Japan 3

11:15am
Japan takes a 3-2 lead into the break against the Kookaburras after an insane first half. Australia appeared to be all over the home side and it looked like it was going to be a comfortable win but in the space of three minutes it all changed and now we have a game on our hands. Meanwhile, Australia’s softball team has taken a 1-run lead over Canada in the first innings.

11:11am
OMG!!!! And just like that Japan has taken the lead! Unbelievable scenes. Well, there would be if we had spectators but no doubt Japanese fans would be going nuts at home. They’ve just scored three goals in as many minutes to SHOCK the Kookaburras. They’ve also just stopped a great chance by Australia with a great save by goalkeeper Takashi Yoshikawa. Japan 3 Kookaburras 2

11:04am
Japan has bounced back with their first goal of the Olympics. It was a very nice goal too, a reverse flick dive by Kenta Tanaka. Seven minutes to go until halftime. Kookaburras 2 Japan 1

10:47am
Make that 2 goals!! Another one to the Kookaburras. They’re on fire at the end of this quarter. This time it’s Tom Craig who scores the goal after a well-worked play. The Kookaburras are looking very slick to start their Tokyo campaign. One minute to go in the quarter and they’re all over Japan. Kookaburras 2 Japan 0

10:44am
GOAL in the hockey. The Kookaburras are up 1-0 after a goal to Tim Brand in his first Olympics at the age of 22. Great start with just under four minutes to go in the opening quarter.

10:38am
A great performance by Australia’s Annabelle McIntyre and Jessica Morrison who made it look easy by winning their heat in the women’s pair rowing. Elsewhere, we are 0-0 between Japan and the Kookaburras. Both teams have had chances to score and it’s been a very open game. In table tennis, Australia’s Jian Fang has defeated Cuba’ Daniela Fonesca 4-0. They play best of 7 games with first to 11.

10:30am
Kookaburras vs Japan is underway and not too long until Australia’s softball team takes on Canada after a loss and a win to start the Olympics earlier this week.

10:26am
The Kookaburras are on the field for their match against Japan and we’re almost ready to go. National anthems now. Great to hear the Aussie anthem on Day 1. The hockey stadium looks superb. Such a shame that we can’t have spectators.

10:09am AEST
Not great news on the first morning of the Games with Simon Geschke from Germany ruled out of the men’s road race after returning a positive COVID result. It comes after the Spanish cycling team also had a COVID scare but they were cleared earlier this morning. Before today we had at least 79 people connected to the Games test positive to COVID. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a tally we keep an eye on just as much as the medal tally.

9:59am AEST
Good morning and welcome to The Roar’s Day 1 coverage. I’m Benjamin Conkey and I’ll be taking you through the day session. We’re about half an hour away from the Kookaburras taking on Japan in men’s hockey. At the moment we have some rowing taking place with the Men’s Single Sculls Repechage. There’s been a bit of talk about rowing already with fears about a typhoon and choppy waters. It looks (relatively) smooth out there at the moment.

Earlier
The Olympics were opened at the main stadium on Friday night in a ceremony affected by a lack of fans. Around 1000 dignitaries were in attendance to watch the four hour production, highlighted by a spectacular drone display, and the lighting of the cauldron by Japanese tennis superstar Naomi Osaka.

Australia had 63 athletes marching in the ceremony, headed by dual flag bearers Patty Mills and Cate Campbell.

The big events Saturday include the men’s cycling road race, the Matildas second group match and the start of the swimming program. No medals are up for grabs in the pool until Sunday morning with the program set up to give maximum impact to US TV audiences.

Australia’s mens hockey team takes on Japan at 10:30am AEST with the women’s softball team facing Canada from 11:00am AEST.
