Josh Addo-Carr celebrated his spectacular late try for the Kangaroos by running around shouting “I’m a freaky man” – at least, according to his teammate Matt Burton.

The Bulldogs pair combined for one of the scores of the tournament, with Burton rescuing a crossfield kick by Ben Hunt with an airborne, through-the-legs pass to Addo-Carr, who kicked forwards, raced around the defenders and touched down with millimetres to spare.

The Foxx was pleased with his work, said Burton, and celebrated in typically understated fashion.

“He was yelling at the crowd ‘I’m a freaky man, I’m a freaky man’,” laughed Burton after the game.

“I didn’t really have to do much and I didn’t really know where it was going. I just flicked it under and hoped for the best. Then he finished it off so it’s all him and he gets all the credit there.

“You can’t beat speed, he’s too fast. He was outstanding tonight with four tries and he deserved them all.”

Burton might have been there for the aftermath, but he didn’t even see the score itself until afterwards. When he did catch the clip, he noticed the similarity to Greg Inglis’s try – or at least, the pass from Greg Inglis for Mark Gasnier – from the Kangaroos’ win over New Zealand in 2008.

“I ran into the hoardings in the corner,” he said. “I turned around and I was hoping he finished it off so it was nice.

“As soon as we got back in the sheds I thought, ‘I’ve seen that before somewhere’. And I just remembered GI’s flick back in and I thought it’s pretty crazy how that worked. I think he (Inglis) is on a different level than me. It was unreal to get that try.

“I had no idea (where Addo-Carr was). I flicked it back in and hoped for the best. It was all him pretty much, He finished it off, he’s the freaky man.

“I knew when I flicked it back in (that his foot was in the air). But when they went back to video ref I was thinking, ‘jeez I hope my foot’s in’ so I was sighing in relief.”

Nathan Cleary back Burton’s assessment of Addo-Carr’s celebration up. “It was pretty cool, he’s a freaky man,” said the halfback. “I saw Foxxy get up and he was high fiving the crowd and saying how good he was!”

Kangaroos coach Mal Meninga said the try was one of the best to be seen in the green and gold.

“It was magnificent,” he said. “That’s what happens when you’ve got such talented players. You put me on the spot and there’s been many great tries scored in international rugby league, but that’s right up there. “
