Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the French Open after failing to recover in time for the tournament following knee surgery.

The French Tennis Federation confirmed his absence from Roland Garros, which starts May 28, on Tuesday. Though no fan of clay – the Australian last played the French Open in 2017 – he had planned to appear this year citing his girlfriend’s wish to go to Paris.

However, Kyrgios is on course to play at Wimbledon, where he reached his maiden grand slam final last year, according to media reports.

The 28-year-old, who is yet to play a match this year, could make his return in Stuttgart beginning on June 12.

Kyrgios last played an official tournament in October and underwent surgery in January.

It’s still unclear whether defending champion Rafael Nadal will compete in Paris following a hip injury he suffered at the Australian Open.
