We know Sebastian Vettel is leaving Ferrari and it’s going to be a messy divorce between both parties.
The 31-year-old will be looking for a new team, and that new team will be Racing point.
Why? Because Racing Point will be a match for Red Bull Racing and Mercedes with the regulation changes coming to F1 in 2022. The team will be challenging for a world championship in the next three years.
Moreover, Vettel is Lance Stroll’s perfect teammate. Both just get on with racing, and Stroll is a calm driver. The team’s strategy for both drivers in 2020 has been fairly even for both Stroll and Sergio Perez.
This is not the case at Ferrari, where they are worrying about Charles Leclerc. This was made clear at Barcelona, where it seemed Ferrari didn’t have a plan for Vettel after Leclerc’s retirement. Vettel’s disgust could be heard over team radio with his team’s lack of strategy.
In addition, by having him at Racing Point, he’ll be of great benefit to the team as they can grow. He’s a marketing dream and will help the team bring in more fans. Vettel also appears to have a very good relationship with owner Lawrence Stroll.
If he goes to Racing Point, he will help the team push for more podiums and could be their first world champion. Vettel is an excellent driver, and with the right team he can return to his 2013 form, the last of his four world titles won while racing at his unstoppable best. By going to a team that is near the top, he has the chance to revitalise his career while keeping on pace with Mercedes.
Furthermore, with Lawrence Stroll, Lance Stroll’s father, in control of the team, Vettel can be sure investment into the car will remain strong. It has already been competitive this year, and if they keep a similar car for next year, having Vettel in the team will boost their chances of winning races sand, eventually world titles.
The other potential options? Vettel had been talking to Renault, but this was never going to benefit his career given Renault have been very inconsistent in 2020. With Fernando Alonso now making a return to F1 with the French team, it would be hard for Vettel to crack it there.
But while partnering Fernando Alonso would make for a tense garage, Lance Stroll’s calm character and Racing Point’s equality strategy between teammates offers more potential. We saw at Barcelona both Perez and Stroll were allowed to battle for fourth – if that were Renault, there would surely be backing off by one of the drivers.
If Vettel wants to get back to his best and be remembered for his four world titles, a move to Racing Point is the right way to go.
