Carlton’s improved form is due to the players’ “natural human reaction” to Mick Malthouse’s sacking, the former Blues coach says.
Malthouse was fired following a disastrous start to the 2015 campaign, with the club winning just one of eight games.
Interim coach John Barker has overseen two wins from six, with players speaking of a new sense of freedom.
“It always happens with an interim coach. The enthusiasm, the newness … It’s a constant, I’ve seen it happen,” Malthouse told radio station 2SEN.
“It’s a natural human reaction.”
Malthouse said the doubt surrounding his position affected players towards the end of his reign, and the appointment of Barker had returned a sense of stability.
“The innuendo and the uncertainty of my position, as I said to the board at the time, was going to spill over the players,” he said.
“No doubt it was going to spill over the players – and it did.”
