'Don't understand the point': Newcastle forward tees off at VAR after controversial non-penalty
The challenge in the box left Anthony Gordon with a ripped sock and a sore ankle, but VAR deemed it not worthy of a…
I am making quite a jump from my normal waters of rugby league, to dip my toe in the world’s biggest and most popular sport. So bear with me on this one.
With news breaking that Sam Allardyce is being sacked as the English national team manager, you have to take time to see the positives in the whole situation.
The now former English manager leaves the role with a 100 per cent winning record, claiming one win from one game. Oh, and did I mention it was a clean sheet?
So it seems he was statistically the best manager England had ever seen. But thats only based off of English football team stats.
Throughout the seven clubs ‘Big Sam’ has been at, he’s never achieved a win percentage higher than 50 per cent. His closest being with Blackpool from 1994-96, where he racked up 44 wins in 102 games (43.14%).
To be fair to him he did achieve promotion to the Premier League with both the Bolton Wanderers in 2000-01, and West Ham in 2011-12.
But his last gig at Sunderland was lucky to end well, with the Tyne and Wear club barely staying in the EPL at the end of the 2015-16 season. Although they look set to go down at the end of this season under the hapless David Moyes.
While he was known as ‘Super Sam Bionic Man’ in his playing days, he may as well be known as ‘Sub-Standard Sam’ as a manager.
England will have better managers, and with the potential youth coming through, they will also have success.
For it doesn’t take a world class manager to get super kid Marcus Rashford on the score sheet.
