Australia’s great hope Alex de Minaur will get his Wimbledon campaign up and running on Tuesday evening as he takes on Marco Cecchinato at the All England Club. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 8pm (AEST).
There can be no doubting that Cecchinato is a clay court specialist, having been a one-time grand slam semi-finalist at Roland Garros and holding very poor records on the grass court for the duration of his career.
That should give De Minaur an edge in this contest, but yet, when the players met in the first round at The Championships last year, de Minaur wasn’t able to just blast past the Italian fighter.
Instead, de Minaur needed four sets and a mighty strong serve under pressure to go past him.
The line of Cecchinato’s form on grass courts has been true this year, with two losses in two attempts for the World No.41, but unfortunately, a first round loss at Roland Garros against Nicolas Mahut makes it even worse.
De Minaur has actually struggled on the grass respective to last year’s form and the potential he possesses, with his only win across two tournaments coming against Andreas Seppi in the first round at ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
Since then, the Australian No.1 has lost to Jordan Thompson and the big serving Alijaz Bedende, and the level to which his power is restricted by size and power on a surface he has regularly punched above his weight on over the years.
De Minaur’s game style isn’t suited to the short points and big serve of grass court tennis, so everytime he knocks over a good player, it makes you sit up and take notice.
Given Cecchinato’s struggles on the surface over the course of his career though, it’d be something of a surprise to see him go past with a win here.
Prediction
De Minaur should be too strong and, for the second year in a row, end Cecchinato’s Wimbledon campaign before it begins.
De Minaur in four sets.
