Another home and away AFL season – a truly spectacular one – has concluded, September has finally arrived, and most importantly it’s once again time for the AFL finals. To kick us off Richmond travel north to the Gabba to take on Brisbane in a do-or-die elimination final. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:20pm (AEST).
Brisbane comes in to this clash on the back of a heavily scrutinised lacklustre performance against Melbourne which resulted in a 58-point loss and a large amount of off-field drama for the team to work through post-match.
Chris Fagan’s team will be looking to put that all behind them to reverse the tides of their 1-5 record in finals under his coaching; a record that surely stings even more when they think about how most of those finals have been played at the Lions’ home ground.
In stark contrast to their opponents, Richmond enters the finals with confidence on the back of a four-game winning streak which started with defeating the Lions themselves back in round 20. They loom as dark horse contenders in these finals as a team with a number of key players who have experienced the bright lights of finals football before as well as coaching staff, and found success.
Green Day told the world to wake them up when September ends, well recent history shows us that Richmond wake up when September starts.
A third finals matchup in four years between these two sides that have had opposite fates in the Septembers of recent history. Richmond will be hoping to show us all once again that they thrive on the biggest stage, in the biggest moments, and under the highest of pressures. Brisbane will be striving to flip the script of their previous finals runs in the Fagan era so far and finally make a long run into September.
A match-up of two of the highest scoring teams in the league this year that is guaranteed to result in heartbreak for one club and elation for the other.
Reinforcements are incoming at Richmond with Shane Edwards making way for the superstar Dustin Martin’s return from a hamstring injury all the way back in round 16.
Meanwhile, Brisbane have decided to ice Marcus Adams for the remainder of this season due to concussion issues. They also lose both Noah Answerth and Cam Rayner to suspension for this key match, and Jarryd Lyons to a groin injury. Mitch Robinson is set to be elevated from the medi-sub slot into the starting 22, and Deven Robertson recalled. Brisbane are also fielding debutant Darcy Wilmot – who they took with pick 16 in last year’s draft.
