The preliminary finals are upon us, as minor premiers Geelong face the in-form Brisbane with the prize a grand final berth. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage from 7:50pm (AEST).
The second and third highest-scoring teams of the 2022 home and away season are set to battle it out in what looms as a gripping preliminary final.
For Geelong, this will be only their second contest in four weeks after having won themselves a week off by defeating Collingwood in their high-octane qualifying final.
The break has given the Cats the opportunity to get some extra rest and recovery, which was much needed. Jeremy Cameron is seemingly still recovering from his late-season hamstring and Cam Guthrie from his shoulder injury.
Geelong have previously been a team that struggles immediately after a break, holding a 5-12 record since 2012 in such matches. They seemed to have addressed this issue so far this year, and they’ll be working to make sure it stays that way, as a return to their previous habits may prove extremely costly.
Brisbane have had a fairytale run into this matchup, beating Richmond in a nail-biting thriller that went to the wire in the elimination final, and then defeating reigning premiers Melbourne in the semis with a strong second-half performance to overhaul a lead that had stretched out to 28 points just shortly before the halftime siren.
The fact that Brisbane had looked severely outmatched by the Demons just a few short weeks ago, and that it was the Lions’ first win at the MCG since 2014, no doubt made the taste of victory even sweeter.
Geelong is rightfully the strong favourite, as they well should be considering the Cats are on a 14-game win streak and are at ‘home’ in the MCG.
But the Lions are no stranger to playing the underdog role and are carrying the momentum of last week with them back to the very ground where they won their epic against the reigning premiers.
The Cats are looking to make a return to the AFL grand final in order to break an 11-year premiership drought; meanwhile, the the Lions are hoping to reach the big dance for the first time since 2004.
In team news, the Lions have successfully appealed Jarrod Berry’s suspension to leave him free to play this week. Oscar McInerney has recovered from his concussion, and is set to make a return at the expense of Darcy Fort; while Joe Daniher, who had to miss last week’s game due to the birth of his child, will slot straight back into the Lions’ forward line, with Tom Fullerton making way for his return.
Meanwhile, Geelong are fairly steady and will be fielding the same 22 as they did in their qualifying final, but some injury concerns do still seem to cloud the Cats. Cameron has missed a few consecutive training sessions this week, but insists he’s good to go and has been named in the side.
