Does anybody play International Cricket Captain? It’s like the cricket version of Football Manager I guess.

Well last time I played it Gary Ballance was ridiculous, I’m not sure what his recent County records are like but in he averaged something like 87 after 10 Tests with 7 centuries on that game. Apparently Celtic tried to tried to loan a young Lionel Messi based on the managers son’s FM manager game, maybe Ballance is that good? Seriously though can we bring Gilly back for an hour with Panesar at the WACA?

England's Ashes squad is very risky

I wrote this article a good two years ago and its disappointing that nothing has changed. He is a cricketer and from my observations from afar and brief meetings consider him an exceptional and genuine man.

Did Hussey really cause rifts in Aussie camp?

Let me preface my comments by saying I am a massive Clarke fan. I appreciate how honest and forthright he can be with the media and rate his mental toughness hugely.

The constant character assassination baffles me – here is a bloke streets ahead of any other Australian cricketer in terms of performance over the last 5 years on top of that he has a chronic back injury but has managed it extraordinarily to only miss one Test. On top of that he has turned his back on millions of dollars firstly for his family and secondly for Australian cricket by spurning the IPL for a number of years. Why exactly don’t Australians like him?

Oh that’s right apparently he got a bloke sacked because he didnt like him. The same bloke who has had trouble with every cricket side he ever played in, was mid 30s, didnt score a run for 18 months and got a summer ending injury. Oh but he scored a few runs in the County D2 bring him back. Sheeesh!

One of the all time greats!

The ten greatest fictional sports characters of all time

Started with a list of about 20 and struggled to get it down from there, and even then I cheated a bit by bundling Ferrell and Sandler together and packaging Creed, Lang and Drago at #10

The ten greatest fictional sports characters of all time

Pacino is in there Johnno, that Inches speech is unbelievable. Costner was very very close as was Redford for the Natural and Snipes and Harrelson from White Men Can’t Jump.

You’re right mate pretty much a cinematic list. Will check these two out haven’t heard of them before

The ten greatest fictional sports characters of all time

I’ve watched the first season of East Bound and Down and couldn’t shake the feeling that I was watching a Will Ferrell-lite character. I was actually watching it thinking I feel like Will Ferrell should be the lead character here and then boom he turned up as the car salesman. Different strokes for different folks sort of list. Wildthing was pretty close along with a few other Major League characters, Tin Cup has been right at the top of my to watch list for a while, will get around to it sooner or later

The ten greatest fictional sports characters of all time

Weaving as Jardine was very good I thought, but keeping it to fictional stories

Matt Hayden. Crickets Tommy Raudonikis or Brett Kenny. Give me a break

Is Clarke right man to captain the Test team?

In every Test its got to a point where common sense says we’re gone only for us to fight back so defeat is more crushing. At Trent Bridge it was the batting collapse and then Agar’s 98, at Lords we lost the toss but then had England in trouble early, Old Trafford we looked to be running out of time, then had the Poms 3 down for nothing before the rain saved them. At Chester le Street we let the target get out to 300 so I thought we were gone. At 1-150 just when you start to believe we predictably fall in a heap once again.

The hardest thing for a sporting team is transition from the being competitive as an achievement phase to competitive as an expectation and winning as an achievement phase. We’re stuck in that awkward position at the moment

Pain of loss worse because we had it won

If I were a first grade coach I would lock my captain in a room and make him watch Cameron Smith sweet talking referees on loop hour after hour. Not only the best footballer in my lifetime but the best captain.

What ever happened to the Sherminator from 2005. I liked that bloke, not so much Ian Bell in his current form. It is scary to be 2 nil down with Cook, Trott and Prior on a 2 from 10 rating

Ashes player ratings ahead of fourth Test

I have no problems with players pushing the rules to the boundary of their interpretations in order to win. Sport is about winning and any other notion is pure nonsense. If KP and the English are taping their bats I wouldn’t be the least bit surprised or disappointed in fact Ive been waiting for some sort of innovation along these lines since we first saw Hot Spot. As you say it is the job of an umpire to officiate the game according to the rules and regulations and I do not think players are duty bound into self regulation.

SPIRO: Ashes series is 'just not cricket'

I’m not convinced that video referees have improved the officiating of any sport. I actually believe it just makes it harder to cop the ones we still get wrong, or I interpret to be wrong. Look at last years NRL finals as an example alongside this farcical series.

It's simple enough: DRS doesn't work

He played for the English academy side so he is ineligible? So all the Aussies and Kiwis that have played Junior Kiwis/Kangaroos are ineligible too? Some sort of logic there. I can say he is a rookie because under the Dally M definition he is, I thought that had been made clear by now

STEVE TURNER: NRL's super kids mean a Dally M dilemma

And George never played first grade in the ESL, his twin brother Thomas played 48 games for Bradford though. Like I said George has this award sewn up already

STEVE TURNER: NRL's super kids mean a Dally M dilemma

I will admit that I never had a huge opinion of Fifita at NRL level. Saw him as a big bodied bully at NYC level and didn’t see it translating to first grade. I and they were pretty wrong there weren’t we? Matt Groat on the other hand has never looked up to it and I still think never will be. If you could have your time over eh…

Why it has been a positive few months for Wests Tigers

Are you thinking of his Toyota Cup halves partner Harry Seijka? Blake’s future is in the backrow much like Curtis Sironen so not sure Wests needed to go that way with their young squad. There’s a reason Penrith don’t want him anymore although as you say with the expected outlay and his age there is a definite upside

Why it has been a positive few months for Wests Tigers

He’s a gifted individual that’s for sure

STEVE TURNER: NRL's super kids mean a Dally M dilemma

Blake Austin – another backrower trying to play in the halves and Cory Patterson are quite underwhelming signings though

Why it has been a positive few months for Wests Tigers

Should never have been signed in the first place but he is there now. Can play a composed hand alongside Brooks and with Farah there too will be able to play to his (limited) strengths – his running game.

Why it has been a positive few months for Wests Tigers

Thanks Will. Imagine if you could add Fifita and a hard nosed Gibbs to that rotation right now, I’m guessing you wouldn’t be 15th. Big wraps on recently re-signed young prop Nathan Brown as well and a shame the club has lost former Australian schoolboy lock and captain Brendan Santi

Why it has been a positive few months for Wests Tigers

Playing like every other footy side in history with nothing to play for. Avoiding the tough stuff – dont want to split a lip and not be able to drink that night.
