The Crusaders almost butcher it. But, interestingly, they go for the league style cross kick. It misses everyone, comically, but it results in a drop out for the Chiefs after one of theirs pounces on the ball.
Kerr Barlow has come on for Weber, meanwhile, while there’s a mark to be kicked inside the Chiefs lineout

The Crusaders are shaping up for a lineout 5m from the Chiefs line, and meanwhile the Chiefs have replaced their whole front row

A dropped ball from the Chiefs after kickoff gives the Crusaders a good opportunity for a try.

Ellis has been pinged for offside. The commentators reckon he’s got away with cynical play, and theyre not wrong.
McKenzie is going for the kick right out in front.

The Crusaders bugger up again – too much attack means a dropped ball and a scrum for the Chiefs inside the Crusaders 22

Who is this McKenzie Enigma? The Chiefs fullback plays with the Crusaders, shaping up to kick for the line when instead he does a cheeky tap instead.
The Chiefs launch an attack out of that, and they almost manage to run all those 40m, but the final kick bobbles up for a sweeping Mo’unga. Now there’s a Crusaders lineout 10m out from their line

We’ve now got a Chiefs scrum on halfway after a double knock on. Replays show the refs missed about 4 more knock ons in the play before!

There’s been a few changes – the Crusaders have done a prop swap, and Cruden’s about to come on for McDonald.

There’s a penalty for offside. The Chiefs could kick this.
The Crusaders had a lineout, they cleared it, Chiefs attacked and now this, to catch you up on events while I typed out that last potential try.

TRY??? Chiefs
This is absolutely ridiculous – even the refs gave up.
The Chiefs have gone coast to coast. The Crusaders won their scrum, went wide. They were making head way down the right. A haphazard ruck resulted in Ellis, for some reason, doing a tunnel ball pass. That was intercepted. From there the Chiefs rushed down the right. The ball was bobbling at one stage, and Dagg fell on it but it squeezed out. After a few more passes around they flopped over the line.
Unfortunately for Chiefs fans, it’s been ruled a no try cos there was an out.

Got another scrum after yet more handling shenanigans.
McKenzie was just then walking behind Retallick. Retallick looks like a square bigger than McKenzie

Ball’s been dropped, we have a scrum. Chiefs feed.
Very tactical game, this. NFL fans would be proud

And the Chiefs already have a drop out after a Crusaders kick goes too far.\

Youre saving me having to write a halftime review. Thanks Digger!
I’d probably also add that the conditions are aiding the Chiefs more than the Crusaders. Crusaders would have scored if they hadnt dropped the ball so often, and their scrum seems stronger too (soft ground not helping there)

TRY!!! Crusaders (Macilai)
What even is this. A magical take from Nadolo opens up a massive opportunity for the Crusaders. He hands it off to Kieran Read, and the Chiefs defenders catch up to him. He however is able to off hand it to Ellis who spreads it wide for the arriving support and they manage to throw it around until they go over.
Mo’unga’s got a very hard kick from the sideline – but he gets it!

We have a Crusaders lineout about 25m out from their line after an impressive clearing kick from Low.
Not much has gone on really, just lots more kicking since then. Although McKenzie went for a drop goal from within his own half that was nowhere near succeeding.
Another lineout, to the Chiefs on halfway

Nadolo makes a very promising barnstorming run, but his offload is dropped. The Chiefs then attack, but a tactical kick from McKenzie goes 50ms and out over the try area so its coming back to where it was kicked.

TRY!!! Chiefs (Weber)
Damian McKenzie gets a try from nothing, as he skins straight through the Crusaders defence, beating 4 defenders in a few seconds. He offloads to Weber just in time, who avoids an ankle tap and swings over the line.
McKenzie gets the extras.

Again, a bunch of forcings back results in a lineout for the Chiefs deep in their territory. A sniping kick from Dagg set that one up.

The Chiefs catch the Crusaders napping with a cheeky tap – again! – and have the upper hand again. Nadolo returns the coming tactical kick, and 1 v 1 as he squares off with the catcher, McKenzie. McKenzie tries to out run Nadolo, who’s about 2x as big as him, but Nadolo manages to slap his ankle as he runs past.
The Chiefs hold onto it, but there’s a knock on only a few phases later so now we have a Crusaders scrum on halfway.
