I wrote a similar article a few years ago choosing my favourite players.

The 'Favourites Overseas XV' is complete. Will today's players be remembered as fondly as these rugby icons?

Glaring omissions:
Hugo Porta
Colin Meads
Frik Du Perez
H O De Villiers
J J Williams
Mannetjies Roux

Where where?

The QC critics on this site forget that he has played virtually every minute of the Rugby Championships outside the worst scrum-half in the international rugby.

Agree. Best I’ve ever seen.

Ten All Blacks and zero Wallabies - although one came close - named in fan-picked all-time rugby XV

I don’t disagree with you, I was just saying that it’s a pity because it’s such a beautiful country and has amazing facilities for rugby. I would love to watch a World Cup there (didn’t make it in 1995), but for the reasons you articulate this probably won’t happen.

Australia gets 'preferred candidate' status to host 2027 Rugby World Cup

All those whingeing about South Africa not getting it forget that South Africa have not applied since being dudded by the French bribe for the 2023 World Cup.
Which is a pity because a World Cup in South Africa would be brilliant. I haven’t been there for about three years (I haven’t been anywhere – locked up in Australia), but I’ve had several wonderful holidays there. I truly believe it’s the most beautiful country I’ve ever been to, and I have been to more than 40 countries (I’m a travel tragic). Also, it has the best rectangular stadiums in the world, by far, after building a host of new stadiums for the soccer World Cup.
As to those who say that no one would want to travel to South Africa, I disagree. I’m already looking at another holiday there at the end of next year. Thousands of tourists visit every year, particularly from Europe. The Garden Route is full of Scandinavians and Germans and the Cape Town full of poms. If you haven’t been there, give it a try.

Oh, come on! These guys are staying in five star hotels training and playing rugby, a sport they supposedly love.

Compare that, for example, to my parents generation, involved in the Second World War. My father spent nearly 6 years abroad, with his fiancé in South Africa, 3 1/2 years of which was in POW. Even South African baby boomers had it tougher with national service and army camps. I spent two years doing national service, 10 months of which was in the border war. Thereafter, for the next 10 years I was called up for a camp every year, several of which were for three months, again in the border war. Now those were “bubbles” that I could’ve done without.

Methinks the players are getting a little precious.

The Thursday rugby two-up: One bio-bubble too many for the ‘Boks and Pumas?

Kobe is not a “tackler“. He is in position to catch the ball, looking up at the ball with his arms out to catch it. Murray leaps into his space. Dangerous player by the latter, in my view.

Was this worthy of a red card?

And if it’s not dead it’s 10 m out. Not even vaguely accurate. Compare someone like Pollard – inside the 5 almost 100%

Take the three: Rebels show how Wallabies can win the Bledisloe

The problem is compounded in Australia because no one, and I mean no one, can kick for the corner. The line out is at best 10 m out instead of 5. The result is that the Australian teams from the Wallabies down hardly ever score after kicking “for the corner“, Because they never get near the corner.

Only just seen this so my comment 5 months later probably won’t be seen but any list of the greatest English players must include Roger Uttley and Fran Cotton, key members of the greatest rugby team ever (by far) – the 1974 British Lions.

Corne and everyone else who has commented, you have all missed that the South African government is yet to give permission for the Springboks to travel. According to The Times the current regulation reads: “only individuals who have an employment contract with a team outside the Republic may be permitted to leave the Republic in accordance with the Directions issued by the Minister of Home Affairs.”

That does not include South African sporting teams and it is not yet clear whether they will even be allowed to travel. So all this hysterical criticism of the Springboks and SARU is misplaced

Should South Africa participate in the Rugby Championship?

1. Frik Du Preez
2. Danie Gerber
3. Jan Ellis
4. Mannetjies Roux
5. H O De Viliers

My top five Springboks of all time

I am not enjoying it one bit. I miss the NZ and RSA sides.

Can I say I'm actually enjoying Super rugby again?

Willie has been great over the years but Fassi is the future>

I think you left the word League off the end of your sentence.

Wallabies coach yet to give up hope Joseph Suaalii will stick with rugby union

Vermeulen at 8 and Fassi at 15. Otherwise agree.

My Springboks starting XV for the 2021 Lions series

The clip of Suaalii highlights reminded me of a similar video of highlights of the South African (current Sharks) Aphelele Fassi playing as a schoolboy:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JThVrKjwThc
I see quite a few similarities between the two. Fassi, now 21, was quickly becoming a star playing fullback for the Sharks before C19. If he continues on that trajectory a test jumper surely awaits. I hope that I will be able to say the same about Suaallii in the future.

Who should take the helm at Rugby Australia?

Thanks Jeznez. Didn’t know about his early rugby background. But boy did I love watching him play. Oodles of natural talent.
