I’m inclined to agree with those who said Trumper was a generational talent – certainly given the amount of griping players do these days about pitches and how quickly batters these days fall to bits when there’s a tiny bit of moisture or damp you have to think his technique must have been ironclad to survive and score as well as he did on some of the uncovered goat tracks he had to play on.

Lies and damn lies: Cricket’s debatable statistics

Great article Matt. Liked reading that.

I think one other thing that colours the stats a bit is that what is recorded has changed over time. For a long time for example, balls faced was not recorded as part of a batter’s innings, only minutes at the crease – hence the situation where we try and divine how many balls someone might have faced based on over rates and who they were batting with etc.

The lack of apples to compare with apples means there’s always going to be room for a good old fashioned judgment call based on experience, ability and collected years of observation – rather like an LBW decision at any level below that which has TV cameras at the ground – not everything can be decided on the data.

That’s why for example I’d have no qualms whatsoever about picking Sobers – everyone who played with him reckoned he was the greatest – I think when they were picking the 5 cricketers of the 20th century he got 90/100 votes, behind Bradman with 100/100, and the next highest was in the 20’s or 30’s – I do question what the other 10 were thinking to be honest!

Lies and damn lies: Cricket’s debatable statistics

Seems an appropriate time to dust off one of my favourite Paul Keatingisms, when he was referring to Howard’s doomed leadership circa mid 1980’s

“What we have got is a dead carcass, swinging in the breeze, but nobody will cut it down to replace him.”

For me, the word replace – that’s the interesting part. Bucks is absolutely finished, no shadow of a doubt. Last time someone was this doomed halfway through a season it was Brendan Bolton. It’s who they turn to afterwards that’s up in the air. Do they go seasoned pro, or do they try someone new? Not too many compelling candidates out there unemployed at the moment. And it’s a heck of a job to take on. Not much time for training wheels.

If they were gonna try and lure someone out of another club I’d say John Longmire (assuming Clarko says no). They could use a bit of his starch right now. And all the doomsayers saying he was driving Sydney like Buddy drives his SUV seem to have been premature in writing them and him off.

Sorry Nathan Buckley, but it's over

If you guys aren’t gonna use Tom Rockliff maybe you could pack him off to Carlton

Is footy's forgotten free agent the key to unlocking Carlton's skipper?

What you’re really saying is question anything you don’t personally approve of and slavishly agree with everything you do.
I would hardly call that page “science”. Nor would I call the guardian “science” either.
Certainly the degree of impact of humans on climate is still being determined but in terms of whether or not human emissions are making a difference to the climate, I am unquestionably of the belief, in accordance with the vast majority of scientists in this field, that they most certainly are.

Cricket must start preparing for climate change

LAWWWWWWWWL – sneering at the Guardian for being not fair or objective, which is fair enough – and then pushing Fred Smith’s lovechild as if it’s somehow impartial. That thinkthank makes Ayn Rand look like a card carrying socialist. They’re an organisation specifically founded in the 1960’s as a front to push back against environmentalism and to push barrows for big business.

Fred Smith, this is the same clown who said back in 1992 “Most of the indications right now are it looks pretty good. Warmer winters, warmer nights, no effects during the day because of clouding, sounds to me like we’re moving to a more benign planet, more rain, richer, easier productivity to agriculture.”

Try telling that to anyone who’s lived in California or indeed anywhere in the USA in the last few decades. As spectacularly wrong as anything Tim Flannery ever came up with.

Feel free to hang your hat on whatever evidence makes you feel good, but don’t for a moment think you can claim something like cei is objective or fair. You’re just on the other side of the spectrum clinging to some biased old tripe because deep down you know saying “I think” is just a weak nonsensical argument, so any old biased hack is a safety rope worth clinging onto.

No arguments there, he has to be picked first up – but will he last all 5

Probably he will, if he can’t get dropped after his run in England in 2019 he’s never getting the axe halfway through a series

Who should bat at five for Australia in the Ashes?

I think one assumption that could well be challenged is that Warner is going to hold down the opener’s spot all series in 21/22. He is struggling bigtime in the IPL atm, and didn’t exactly set the world on fire when he came back from injury last summer as well.

Who should bat at five for Australia in the Ashes?

Not at all, not when you consider humans have only been around 5000 years, and the industrial revolution commenced less than 300 years ago. It’s only statistically irrelevant, if you, as a denier of human impact on climate change, believe that all the years prior to those are exactly the same because humans don’t have an impact. Which no credible scientist is saying is the case.

Like I said, belief in this theory requires you to trust the view of the truly overwhelming majority of scientists that human impact on climate is measurable, and impactful. You clearly don’t.

The proof is tangible enough if you trust the evidence and the views of experts, which clearly, you don’t.

What on earth would make you think someone as clever and well spoken as myself isn’t full time employed?

Cricket must start preparing for climate change

I must admit, that is crazy. Never seen that happen to a batter before. Helmet being knocked off yes, but never shoes.

The strangest hit wicket dismissal in professional cricket history

See, this is the thing. If you don’t believe in the human impact of climate change – and clearly you don’t, because you’re comparing our current experience with when the world was a volcanic mass in the early stages of gestation – then there’s nothing to be gained from discussing it with you.

The whole point of the theory of climate change is that human impact is accelerating at frightening pace the warming of the planet to the point where the last few decades are actually markedly different. I’d contend it’s been going on for a few centuries, but it’s been getting far worse over the last few decades. If you don’t believe we’re having an impact then you’re just another denier without a clue.

Cricket must start preparing for climate change

Agreed, Voss would just be Bucks mark 2. Why go to another guy who is always coaching in the shadow of his playing career.

Buckley isn’t the only reason for Collingwood’s demise, but he’s a chief architect

If you’re not persuaded by the evidence in front of your eyes over last two decades then there’s nothing I can say that is going to change your mind. So I won’t waste my time.

Cricket must start preparing for climate change

I think you mean bated breath.

I’ve seen variations on your post countless times before. It’s never the human factor, it’s always solar minimums, or politics, or whatever else is your own personal bugbear. You’ll get no debate from me, just an acknowledgment that you’re not gonna change your mind no matter what is said so why would anyone bother engaging with you?

Good article Joss btw, it’s always difficult to put a piece up like that for the dung flingers on this site so credit to you for giving it a crack.

Cricket must start preparing for climate change

As others have said it’s probably a bit early to be making a call on who the batter is walking out at 5, simply because no-one has made a compelling case yet – or more to the point, hasn’t had a chance to make a compelling case yet.

We may not get the same person for all 5 tests either, depending on how the team performs.

Personally it’d warm the cockles of my heart to see Maxwell be given a chance to bat at 5 again – I’m no fan of Henriques. I think Travis Head is more likely than not to be our number 5 batter though, simply on account of prior incumbency and on account of him being on the inside running for the captaincy when Paine finally decides to pack it in, I maintain that is actually a bit of a conundrum for the selection panel that they haven’t solved yet – Smith wants the job back, but I’m pretty sure they don’t want to give it to him.

Who should bat at five for Australia in the Ashes?

Dear oh dear, the miserable old pedant who cries about the word batter being used to describe the man or woman taking strike doesn’t have respect for me, truly devastated Bernie 😂 😂

Marnus Labuschagne dismissed by 45-year-old trundler in county cricket

I hadn’t actually replied to you the last two times. I’d made an observation about the batter article David wrote, and I commented on someone’s remark

I am going to start talking to you now though, it’s far too much fun to see you crying online everytime someone says batter.

Marnus Labuschagne dismissed by 45-year-old trundler in county cricket

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

for someone who is undoubtedly in his 40’s or 50’s you are one of the biggest cry babies online I’ve ever come across

Marnus Labuschagne dismissed by 45-year-old trundler in county cricket

😂 love it Tom.

Proof that even the very best batter can be undone by a good ball and experience.

I think in terms of limited overs cricket, he’s the most revolutionary batter since Dean Jones. Absolute superstar of the short form game, one of the most incredible talents its been our privilege to witness. That 33 ball 100 or whatever it was he smoked off the Windies in that ODI a few years back was just beyond belief.

The numbers that prove AB de Villiers is a genius

Great article, I must admit I’d never heard of most of those batters and bowlers. Mark Benson was definitely a much better umpire than he was a player.

England's best-ever one-Test players

The socialist in me wants to say that a bunch of dirt poor people dying in their tens of thousands aren’t going to be distracted too much by a bunch of very rich people protected from the pandemic at great expense – but perhaps the feats of the batters and bowlers still have the capacity to distract, even when your neighbours dead bodies are on fire in the street.

We shall see how India emerges from this. Certainly their political leadership will be hoping the age old distractions of cricket and hindu/muslim rivalry will overshadow their blistering incompetence.

Is playing cricket in COVID really a welcome distraction?

Ah well, two years playing finals, gotta let someone else have a go. Melbourne seems intent on barging their way into the 8 they can have our spot.

Neale out for eight after ankle surgery

Didn’t notice this article earlier – fully expected half the comments in the thread to be a bunch of huffy insecure rot from Bernie and was not disappointed. Why don’t you go back to writing your 10 part dissection of DL that no-one will ever bother reading and let the batters get on with entertaining all of us with far more sense than to get worked up over such inconsequential nonsense as what noun is applied to the person taking strike.

Cricket’s shift from ‘batsman’ to ‘batter’ is the right one
