“From Postecoglou’s all-out attacking ethos to the defensive-minded van Marwijk, Australia’s national football philosophy remains all over the shop.”

And that in a nutshell is the problem our game now faces, the National Curriculum also contains our Football Vision and in it we have stated we want to play an attacking pro-active game. We are now doing the opposite.

What sort of team do we want the Socceroos to be?

And here is the problem Waz, the A-League and the FFA is to concerned about attracting the “mainstream” “entertainment” dollar.

Our success will come when we start to be answer the football communities view of what football is about.

It's the fact that football is a global game that drives its critics crazy

Foxtel will have a bigger say in the expansion teams than most believe.

The two expansion teams will come from Brisbane Sydney or Melbourne. Its all about demographics and ratings.

Who could be the A-League's next expansion teams?

“Guardiola is being exposed as a fraud”

SERIOUSLY?

I MEAN SERIOUSLY?

Guardiola is being exposed as a fraud

Personally not impressed by the campaign.

But anything is better than nothing.

And even the negative reactions are good because at least we are talking about the A-League.
Be worried if no-one says anything! That’s a problem.

FFA's new A-League launch campaign trolled on social media

A key reason for the establishment of a National 2nd Division is the development of Quality Footballers.

Our current second tier the NPL is state based and has over 100 clubs and 2000 players, only 3 players so far have been recruited from the NPL to the A-League this season so far. Even player advancement from the NYL to HAL squads has been minimal.

The A-League coaches by their actions are declaring the gap is too big. With the continuing growth in participation numbers having 190 elite positions for players is not enough to maintain quality of the HAL and the National Team.

Providing a platform of a National Second Division creates a higher level than state based NPL for player development that will underpin the HAL, provide players for future expansion and provide a testing ground for markets/clubs in future expansion.

Key to a 2nd Division is having clubs who have the ability to meet criteria to play at this level, some key criteria;
Facilities – Match Day and Training
Membership
Financial Strength
Junior Development/Academy
Geographic priority
Community engagement
Paid up Capital
Working Capital

Promotion and relegation in the A-League would do more harm than good

http://www.espnfc.com.au/major-league-soccer/story/2592756/nasl-accuses-us-soccer-and-mls-of-violating-antitrust-laws

I don’t think we should be looking at MLS or NASL as the sole guide to Club development.

But yes key criteria is important to establish and grow a 2nd division. Glory CEO Peter Filopoulos has been saying for some time that a 2nd Division is required for better player development and to better prepare Clubs/franchises to close the growing gap with the A-League if expansion is still on the table..

A 5 year establishment period for a National 2nd Division Clubs/franchises to organically grow at the same time refining the now third tier NPL to allow for their future entry into the National Second Division based on meeting criteria too..

No money, no players, no footprint: The case against the B-League

“Finally, are there really enough high-level players to support the expanded professional structure, or would we simply be recycling the same players? “

No one so far has questioned wether we have the quality of players to fit into a 2nd Division. From the deafening silence on this we must have a level of agreement that we do have the player talent capacity to accommodate a 2nd Division.

At least we are making progress not withstanding the results of the Joeys.

Hardly in demand back in their home countries:
Defintley harsh on the lower league issue but not on the aging dominating level.

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

Granted from a first division club playing 129 games scoring 18 goals.
In one season at Glory plays 26 games and scores 13 goals rated best player in the league.

So the washup:
Lower League No
Journeyman Yes
Ageing at 34yo Yes

2 out of 3 for a generalisation not bad Fadida

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

So Mark who won the Johnny Warren Medal last season?

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

Exposing players to International Academies is different to shipping them off.

Youth Players who have travelled overseas and spent some time there (1-3months) come back with a better appreciation of the levels and work required. Have seen this first hand multiple times in my role.

Definitly European third division level England, Italy, Spain, France Germany the big five is our level.

Would disagree with you on Spain.

These are first tier nations that we can rank with.

Smaller national competitions such as SPL, Holland, Belgium, etc have the advantage of being competitions that can attract talent due their geography.

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

That’s a very good point.

Football is on the cusp of overtaking Aussie rules

Third Division then, interesting!

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

About every Visa player on the list Fadida

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

I made a point about the quality not only of the A-League but of the Australian Footballer in the current cycle.

In a Gold Standard level we are currently at Third Division European Level. If that’s a problem for you then so be it.

I personally don’t have a problem with that.

The future is what concerns me hence comments of exposing our youth (not just the pathway) to international football academies.

Obviously this area is very much fanboy stuff Mark.

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

Personally cant see it.

If Cahill went to a Sydney based franchise I could see the synergies.

Main stream in Melbourne the reaction to Cahill’s arrival has been ho-hum.

Lets see what transpires after the Olympics and AFL finals I suppose.

Tim Cahill is exactly what the A-League needs

First tell me how many major European\South American first division 23-28 year old footballers are playing in the A-League?

Oh also put up or shut up. (Is that the usual school yard refrain?)

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

As a sport we have been too focused and side tracked by “Participation Rates” we need to realise they mean nothing in the greater context.
Junior Football does not have a cultural background, by this I mean it doesn’t have a strong “Football Cultural” under-current.

Parents take their kids to play a football match in the morning, then head off to the MCG to watch an AFL game in the afternoon.

Parents take their kids out of our game when they start High school or in their final two years of High School.

Parents use AFL terminology during kids matches.

I would say that the majority of “Participants” are hobbyists and transients, they have little affinity culturally to our sport.

As a sport we need to get into the real battle field and that’s for more and better facilities and grounds.

Football is on the cusp of overtaking Aussie rules

I think your wrong the gap is bigger than you think.

When ageing lower league journeymen come here and dominate you know we still have ways to go.

But if we want to close that gap we need to get more of our youth and youth coaches exposed to international academy football, my preference would be to have exchange agreements with Clubs in South America.

The gap between the EPL and our leagues is smaller than you think

You are aware that all A-league stadiums are rented!
If a National 2nd division was to be established don’t you think there would be criteria?
This criteria might be about such items as the stadium requirements?
Maybe even presentation of a Business Plan?
Need I go on?

I wonder what would be the revenue streams from Suncorp Stadium with 15,000 average attendance compared to say a 5000 seated Perry Park?

The initial plans for the A-League competition was to have matches played on boutique stadiums if ever there was a KPI for FFA and state federations that is probably it – a 10-12K all seater stadium with lights cover corporate facilities in every major city.

Tim Cahill is exactly what the A-League needs

Rather than question the coaches abilities maybe more questions should be directed towards the Owner and the executive director who are making key decisions.

Mariners sack head coach just weeks out from A-League season

In comparison how well do you think these would rate?

South Melbourne vs Melbourne Victory as opposed to Central Coast vs Melbourne Victory

South Melbourne vs Melbourne City as opposed to Wellington vs Melbourne City

In comparison what do think would be the comparative attendances?

26/2/16 WP v MC 6,591
8/1/16 CC vs MV 14,268
6/3/16 CC vs MV 5,032
SMFC vs MCFC ?
SMFC vs MVFC ?
SMFC vs MVFC ?

For a Broadcaster which of the above games would think have more $$$ value?

A vision for a big A-League expansion

Would be nice if the FFA just had a plan for expansion and or promotion relegation or even just a National second tier.
Our game will stagnate until we get out of the holding pattern we now find ourselves in.

A vision for a big A-League expansion

What I find amazing is the assumption that an NPL Club is ready to go from winning the NPL straight into A-League.

The FIFA statutes also allow a level of Licencing so that as a Club is promoted it must meet certain established Criteria.

The simplest way of developing an aspirational and free market competition would be to call for expressions of interest in a National second tier. It would all start and end here.

If there are 10 or 12 Clubs, consortiums or investors prepared to go with it then why not?

The amount of investment in football infrastructure will be more than what we had.
There will be 10 or 12 more superior environments than the State based NPL.

Quite simply the amount of investment in football that aspirational clubs will be required to make will increase as they move up the levels.
The jump from Community to NPL requires more investment so to the jump from NPL to the second tier and the second tier to the A-League.

Its just basic logic.

So the team that comes up from the second tier to the A-League is basically an A-League standard Club any way.

Sure there will be down sides this happens in a free market, but investment in new ideas and new investment in Football cannot be ignored.

Relegation will condemn the A-League to a second-division future
