Slight correction with the pink ball Test in India first being played against Bangladesh, not Sri Lanka in Kolkata 2019. Test barely got to the first session of day three but that was more due to the gap in quality between the two sides. I don’t think there’s been a single pink ball round played at Ranji Trophy level, with the only domestic red ball games there being played in Irani Cup or Duleep Trophy.

This is where NZC do well. They’ve hosted Bangladesh four times in Test series since the beginning of 2010. Bangladesh got slapped up almost every game. But they slowly got better at playing in New Zealand conditions and drew 1 all on their last Test tour of New Zealand. If you don’t consistently give other teams a go, they will not suddenly get better, especially for the new Test playing nations.

Nice article Harry. I agree with all your selections bar Yengi. For me, I’d rather have Fornaroli start over Duke against teams that will set a low block against us. While I’m happy with the two clean sheets, it is worrying at how stubborn we’ve been in the tournament. It was blatantly obvious that our opponents in the first two matchdays would park the bus against us. And yet, we ended up playing into their hands with the long ball and go wide rubbish.

I’m sorry but since when was Chris Gayle a T20 specialist? He played 103 Tests for the West Indies with 15 hundreds and 37 fifties. He would’ve played more had CWI not screwed over their players.

In the most polite way possible, nowhere near Pant. Plenty of blind slogging/lack of footwork and the only reason he’s played so many games for India is due to him playing for Mumbai in the IPL. I would see either Rahul keeping or a young kid by the name of Dhruv Jurel as keeper. Good keeper and a handy bat. Plays fast bowling well and when he accelerates, hard to stop him. Got named in the Test squad against England for the first few Tests.

The first thing for Pant is to play some domestic cricket first. He hasn’t even played a club game yet. India have to tread carefully with him as he’s still not fit to keep yet. India may have to come to Australia without him and play the long game rather than risk it with him. Gonna be a huge loss should he not come to Australia, but for the long term it’s better.

South Africa have a weaker batting lineup + that was on a terrible pitch where the ball was keeping low in the fourth session of a Test. That Test win was the first time India took 20 wickets in a SENA Test after failing to do so for five Tests in a row. How Mhambrey has kept his job for so long is a mystery. Bumrah and Siraj are key as Shami just keeps on getting niggles here and there so him being 100% fit is unlikely.

With Paras Mhambrey as bowling coach, India will lose 4-1. Their quicks have gone downhill since Bharat Arun wasn’t given an extension. Plus, the last two series was under a temporary captain. Cummins is a far better skipper + actually stays composed under pressure

There’s probably three factors that caused Bailey and the selectors to go with Renshaw
1. Renshaw has a Test century unlike Bancroft and Harris
2. Bancroft averages 34 in County Cricket after 62 innings with three hundreds. Renshaw averages 44 in 30 innings in County cricket with five hundreds
3. Bancroft didn’t convert his start into a century vs Pakistan in the PM XI game. Renshaw did.

There’s a fear of demerit points for excessive turners + Rajkot is traditionally a flat pitch in all forms of cricket played there. Jadeja running out Sarfaraz stopped India from getting 500+. Unless Rohit shows some proactiveness as skipper, India may even concede an innings defeat with Ashwin not available for the Test now.
