Ben Pobjie is a writer and comedian whose promising rugby career was tragically cut short the day he stopped playing rugby and had a pizza instead. The most he has ever cried was the day Balmain lost the 1989 grand final. Today he enjoys the frolics of Wallabies, Swans, baggy greens, and Storm.

Four coaches who should be in the mix to replace Arthur - and the absolutely worst candidate who already is
I take issue with the headline. I’m a proud Australian and I have faith that RA can make any mistake they put their minds to.
The Waratahs are where the Blues were a decade ago. Why RA can't make the same mistake NZR did back then
Yeah it seems a bit weird to pot the Eels for making an assistant the interim coach, like every other team does.

Australian Super Rugby supporters seem to have a 'cultural problem' - so how can we fix it?
I do remember reading once that though Hammond could indeed tear an attack apart, he was much better one one side of the wicket than the other, and could be slowed a lot by aiming away from his scoring zone.

Stuart wasn’t a winger, he was a halfback.
Sharks announce themselves as major contenders after downing Roosters in high-scoring Magic Round epic
Yeah it was a haphazard era, the nature of administration, the amateur status of so many players and so forth, meant some careers were more sporadic than others. His first class figures certainly stood up to comparison with the best by that era’s standards, so it would’ve been fascinating to see what he did over a longer period. Of course he might’ve racked up bigger numbers with a more cautious approach too…but then he may not be remembered so well if he’d been more studious in pursuing big figures. I don’t think averages were as prized then as they are now anyway – I remember reading that Charlie Macartney, in the 1930s, declared decisively that Bradman was nowhere near the batsman Trumper had been, pretty much entirely on the basis of style.
The true inventor of Bazball was born 150 years ago, and his records are still utterly bonkers
Trumper and Hill were part of the big 6 who missed the 1912 tour because of a fight with the board. But they were late in their careers already. They had much longer careers than Jessop (in test terms – Jessop had a very full county career of course).

The pass was indeed blatantly forward, but I’ve been watching the game since the 80s and there’s never been a time when blatant forward passes weren’t being missed. It’s just mistakes.
The NRL shouldn't follow the EPL and get rid of video refs - they should recognise that the Bunker is the Wizard of Oz
And that’s the key, innit. The Bunker, like all video refereeing systems, came into being because TV was dissecting every decision anyway.

I’d go back to unlimited tackles. Retro is very in.

Average of 21 with the bat and 35 with the ball – not many with that kind of record make all-time XIs.
The true inventor of Bazball was born 150 years ago, and his records are still utterly bonkers
He only averaged 21 in tests overall, so that tour wasn’t all that far below his standards.
The true inventor of Bazball was born 150 years ago, and his records are still utterly bonkers
He averaged high 30s in an era in which that was an elite average. Jessop averaged 21 in the same era. That’s the context.
