The idea has some merit and a way of getting more uniform jumpers for supporters rather than a new one every week. Only downside is when they change clubs – like when LeBron went from Cleveland to Miami they were burung them in the streets. I guess you could argue they have to buy more. NRL is more about the team rather than the player thyere isn’t such a big I factor for the most part like NBA and NFL but as you say that could change. It is one way of having the players more responsible also.

The number one idea to boost rugby league merchandising

Agree twodogs

Mortimer jumps ship mid-season to Gold Coast

They still haven’t recovered from the financial disaster of their centre of excellence scandal and the stench thereto there somehow have to reconnect with their community after they did their best to disconnect. TV and previous crowds would suggest it is a firn Rugby League area so that doesn’t seem the problem. Add in the age old problem of plenty of distractions on the coast. Indeed they have to decide who their target is – families would seem the logical one. A good feel with the community would help.

NRL must scrap Monday night footy during Origin

Good point Will! Was worth a thought 🙂

NRL must scrap Monday night footy during Origin

Yeah commonsense needs to come into play – play it on the weekend = give it a chance. TV wise why not use the MNF slot as an origin special – play on the hype and add to it. No doubt that would get the MNF viewership and more if done right. Importantly it would stop negative chatter.

I tend to think the Top 14 has been the best thing for French Rugby, it has elevated it to a new non Rugby audience and brought in huge monies. Perhaps there will come a time when they need to change the import law like super league did in England. However they quickly realized having all those Aussie League players helped the quality, I dare say the same is happening in French Rugby.

Three reasons Les Bleus need a revolution

Rugby League SOO is probably the most physical demanding sporting event on the planet. Comparing it to basketball and EPL is as incongruent as you can get, if anything it highlights how physical it is. Even comparing against NFL and NHL doesn’t equate given the less time at play. I get what you are trying to say, just probably not the best comparison. Given the money NBA players get and MLB you could argue they should play more! Don’t forget both those sports had nasty strikes too. Probably points to something having to give to the elite RL player. Not sure what the solution is but RL is well aware of the golden egg.

Six weeks of Origin nothing compared to NBA or EPL season fixtures

A case of a man not having league knowledge and not understanding the game, what makes a team tick or respecting the player. You cannot simply buy a team in body contact sport it is about spirit, teamwork and a team system. Add in the fact players play with pride and are only human and constant snipes don’t auger well to that. The sacking of Noble must have shocked and made many just think how do I get outa here.

Harris was probably more about getting the Wigan system on board I would think.

As far as Russell Crowe I am thinking more like Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys NFL.

Let’s hope his ego lets him see the team develop as there is so much potential. The plus is he clearly loves Rugby League, he just doesn’t quite understand the fabric just yet.

USARL Season IV establishes itself as North America's premier rugby league competition

Yes true Tito – Rugby has certainly gained over the past fee years with internationals and the college 7’s getting on TV. I was just making the point of the potential as outside of the enthusiast there is no real understanding of the different codes. There is potential with many kids not playing American Football now and Lacrosse in particular picking up and Rugby Union also. League being closer to football has potential there.. It is way behind the long history that Rugby Union has as you point out.

Trouble is the petty squabbling that holds RL back with the AMNL basically rudderless and if anything highlights what could have been. The CEO of the Axeman by all accounts is a good operator and has the game at heart rather than out for a sale as the AMNRL appeared to be. It looks like this is the cleanse US League needed from afar.

This weekend the US RU team plays Scotland in Houston before probably around 20,000 in a purpose built stadium. That shows were Rugby League could be if operated correctly given a similar player draw and the popularity of NRL on Fox Sports and to a lesser extent Super League.

Hasn’t all the talk been he is playing Rugby Union in the UK next year

Te'o unsure about life after Souths

All good points code 13 and Remmy – enjoyed reading your inputs

Rugby league should organise a mid-season international break

I would have thought having the game in Melbourne can only help RL in Melbourne – get more Storm membership for example with Tie ins more playing touch, tag, RL its self – all part of a long overdue strategy. All too logical?

NRL takes State of Origin to the MCG for 2015 and beyond

All think it is funny that Rugby League gets so many knockers – seems to do pretty well for such a tiny game. So what if it is played in small provinces you can say that about plenty of sports including Rugby Union. If the game’s followers want it o expand why not? As for pretend scrums clearly the two Rugby codes have gone in different directions even more so since 1995. League has embraced the running and attacking kicking game. Union the technical game and goal kicking. Enjoy both aspects if you choose. as myself and many others do.

What is with the lack of rugby league internationals?

True the sport has been very insular and Rugby as a whole with the elitism etc suffers from that. That has changed somewhat with the commission and Smith with their vision. It doesn’t take long if branded properly given it’s excitement as a TV package.

What is with the lack of rugby league internationals?

Seems to me SOO has elevated rugby league to a level many codes dream of in Australia at least for 3 weeks! In the US NFL fans that have seen it on fox sports marvel at it – often called Australian Rugby in the US. AFL fans are drawn to it, union fans begrudgingly enjoy it. Given that you don’t want to break it. The marketing potential is immense. The problem though is player welfare and secondly if you are going to drop games what do you do. RL needs more countries so isn’t international games just the logic if you do? The answer seems to be somewhere there. Otis also a great ad for the second half of the season which is often overlooked.

How to fix the NRL during the Origin period

I concur on that point about the island loyalties. why not have a round robin of the main pacific islands and winner to play NZ – giving NZ some practice for a test against Australia after the SOO. That will suffice tv land. Key is to get NZ stronger and more involved given the union foothold. Furthermore it is a huge leg up for the Pacific islands.

How to fix the NRL during the Origin period

Exactly but sadly society has given them too much power. Get the game in a position where lawyers lose that power – coming down on illegal acts will do that.

Greenberg issues Origin concussion warning

Agree the BJJ should be left for the UFC, whether we like it or not times have evolved. Wrestling as you said was no accident and is half the reason for the lifting etc. I think they are trying to get back the status quo of good old tackling and eliminate the dangerous play. Doing it at a speed without changing the game too much – lifting, twisting all needs to go and slowly is. The next phase of any crackdown needs to long stints on the sideline or heavy fines for a knee twist for example. What is more damaging to the game another Ricky Stuart Whinge or a season ending knee of neck twist – $10k for the refs rant what about constant neck twists?

The NRL has encouraged the dive

I agree with that – they stay down they get an automatic concussion evaluation. The video can assess any penalty if not given. There is no turning back on the concussion rule, look at where the NFL is headed. The game is plenty tough and appealing and indeed can get ahead of competitors here and win back parents and kids playing the game – there is a potential for knocking out all the negatives and attracting the kids who play touch, watch it etc. concussion is not a small issue.

The NRL has encouraged the dive

Anthony – good points. To bring balance the NRL clearly needs another side in or around Brisbane or the corridor as you mentioned. With regard to private ownership perhaps having a banker in charge of the game now rather than Gallop may bring about better due diligence. Not rushing it is a priority – it seems it has been an endless clean up since Smith took over, get this right and pick the most solid expansion. I also suspect if they want another Brisbane team they might want to grab some of the Reds supporter base.

Where should the NRL look to next for expansion?

Good article – let’s just hope the fallout doesn’t leave too much damage. Will be interesting if there is a huge debt of 20 mil as is rumored or Tinker actually put money in.

Always was obviously a deal done to get the coal deal and the guys greed caught him doubling down at the
top of coal prices. If true the abusive phone calls this is one nasty piece of work especially given would happen to Alex. One thinks ICAC will put an end to this sooner than later.

Hopefully this rallies the community and the team like never before.

The Knightmare is finally over for Newcastle

Is there any Rugby League played in Tasmania? I understood it was very much an AFL following state.
