Seeing everything but saying nothing… like a bed lamp.

If you cannot deliver a profit in the biggest rugby market in Australia you surely deserved to be axed. NSW is in an establish market and should never ever record a n operating loss. The fact that they do, is more than an anomaly.

'Shrinking the sport': Rejected Rebels will sue as RA bosses say secrecy left them no choice but to pull trigger

Most of these sides had a honeymoon period when they signed up many new members, however could not develop a competitive team during their formative years and lost this support. The reason they couldn’t can be traced back to RA that provided little to zero support as they tried to limit the impact of the new franchises on current franchises. RA could learn a lot from AFL on how to enter and develop a new market.

'Shrinking the sport': Rejected Rebels will sue as RA bosses say secrecy left them no choice but to pull trigger

Rebels players were called to a 10am meeting at AAMI Park where they were addressed by Waugh and Herbert.

A difficult decision should be delivered in person and in an emphatic manner. I hope that Pulver and Clyne took notice. A press conference is not the appropriate way to deliver such devastating news. Kudus to Waugh and Herbert.

If RA just made a better decision in 2017…

Olly is correct that the onus was on the consortium to present a compelling case to save the Rebels. Blind Freddy knew that RA don’t have the money to bail out the Rebels again.

I think that no franchise should be too big too fail. Despite the advantages of having the most talent NSW does not have much to show for it. If NSW makes significant losses like the Rebels then they must be axed as we can not afford passengers in a competitive market.

Olly., RA has not setup these new franchises for success and they had to try to compete in an unequal playing field. You can point the finger to a single franchise that underperformed however when every single franchise that joined SR after 2005 underperformed then there is clearly a bigger underlying reason.

'Shrinking the sport': Rejected Rebels will sue as RA bosses say secrecy left them no choice but to pull trigger

We saw in WA what RA support means when RA attempted to drive Rugby WA, the amateur arm of rugby in the state, into bankruptcy by suing the organisation and reducing funding to amateur rugby to meaningless amounts. Victoria rugby should not expect any support.

Yes, unfortunately it seems to have been a never ending money pit. However I do feel with Rebel supporters and the Melbourne rugby public that must feel let down. I hoped the consortium of unknowns were prepared to put a serious and much better offer on the table to ensure that the Rebels could be secured for at least a decade. That would have been a win-win for everyone however it appears that those behind the consortium were not prepared to take the risk.

Unfortunately that commitment means cutting funding to a state at its time of need.

There’s been tens of millions of dollars that has been spent on this franchise over and above other Super Rugby clubs

That is the crux and the “consortium’s proposal” was not convincing enough to overcome the historic challenges. A sad day for Australian rugby however not unexpected.

With the exception of the loss of Donna that is the Force strongest team this season. It would be good to see how Williams progresses in a PSDT kind of role and the addition freedom he will have. I hope Ben F will be an improvement at bench hooker. The Brumbies decided against resting players so it could be a tough game.

If you TT physical attributes and the workrate of a Mostert or Kwagga you will be a world beater. Fortunately for other teams humans did not evolve to produce many of such freaks. In general the bigger you are, the more powerful but then you tend to be slower, you burn energy faster and get tired quicker. You have to be a superhuman to have it all and still have to work extremely hard to stay there.

Rebels relief as SANZAAR delivers Taniela Tupou verdict

I wondered often why Southern African countries tend to have such a pandemic problem with corruption. It seems that the freedom fighters that fought for social justice soon forget the cause they fought for and fall into the same trap. They will even suspend and rig elections just to maintain in power. Then I realise they all ended up with a similar political system (even South Africa) called an African Centralised Republic. A winner takes it all system with no personal account to a defined electorate. The prize of power is just too big to ever want to give it – even when you are voted out of office. The problem is structural – if they went into office to serve their electorate (and not the party), if the pay was poor and if their power were diluted so they could use it to enrich themselves and families – would the behaviour be the same? Surely not.

When different people in different countries end up with the same problem then surely it is not a behavioural issue it is much more – structural. Change the rules of the game and people will behave accordingly.

That is the problem with Australian Rugby, it is not the people not the behaviour – it is the way the organisation is setup to work. Nothing will change until we make structural changes including changing the constitution.

Absolutely brilliant player and a step above other nines at a time when the rugby world have pretty good players in his position.

I think RA is on hiding, not totally unfair if you consider their failures in the past, no matter what they do.

The Wrap: Is Australian rugby about to throw a whole heap of valuable coaching IP out the window?

A lot of ifs, why would RA risk it? Whatever the consortium’s motivation the onus is on them to present a compelling case as they risk losing more. If I was RA I would keep my powder very dry and weather the storm.

Kiss already rested some last week so discounted that option however he can. Would you risk injuries, give players more time to get over niggles or build momentum to the finals…

Super Rugby finals: Best and worst case ladder positions for every team and predicted quarterfinal match ups

It is an intriguing end of the competition with only the Chiefs with the luxury to rest players for the finals and they should. Almost every game is still meaningful with the Crusaders, MP, Force and Drua fighting for that #8 spot on the ladder.

The step up between club level and Superugby level is a big step-up for coaches. A couple of years working in Europe as assistants with other head coaches could be beneficial if we can then recruit more experienced coaches back after a couple of seasons overseas. This could be a better development pathway than to promote Shute Shield coaches directly into the SR head coaching positions. Without a proper tier 3 competition we should look at what works for other nations. It seems like international experience is a must to become a top coach.

The Wrap: Is Australian rugby about to throw a whole heap of valuable coaching IP out the window?

We have been at these crossroads to many times before. This kick the ball two years down the road argument sounds pretty familiar. RA has lost more money to blow life into this franchise than any other franchise and has little to show for it. Good money after bad, money RA doesn’t have. The two years is just enough to get the current directors of the hook for trading while insolvent.
Maybe RA should keep their powder dry until the Melbourne based billionaires come up with something more sustainable like Forrest did for the Force that can secure the future of the Rebels for the next decade.

The Wrap: Is Australian rugby about to throw a whole heap of valuable coaching IP out the window?

Cron is doing the right stuff, however the Force will look back at the first two games against the Rebels and Brumbies respectively and then the MP home game they lost – these costed them a spot in the finals. What Cron needs to reflect is why the Academy players and some that play from the bench could not step up this season and what caused so many injuries to front rowers early in the season. Fines and Feleki went backwards this year and will struggle to get contracts next year.
There are surely recruitment related problems but coaching also play a role especially if you had lots of tough contact sessions during the week. If you like to train a specific way, surely you need to pick a squad that can cover injuries or have a pipeline of youngsters that are ready to step up.
Also if you like to give a young winger experience do it from the bench first. I still don’t know what Tiatia did to get dropped – he must have broken one of the team’s commandments. Both our young wingers have potential but are still not starters yet.
If the team has no confidence or doesn’t turn up (stayed on the plane) then the problem is with the leadership team INCLUDING the coach. It is the HEAD coach’s job to prepare the game plan and ensure that the team is in the right headspace – mentally ready for the game. If you like the players to take responsibility you need to lead by example.
