Agree….if Harris does make a good score (premium aside 😛 ), you and Paul touch on a possible Wade switch which could be a functional move (does Harris have form at #6?); however, I am thinking that Bancroft might feel some pressure if Harris performs tomorrow…or the selectors might??

DRS one of toughest parts of Test cricket: Khawaja

On current form, AUS will not be able to take down Wales in Japan. 🏉

How do the Wallabies take down the world’s new No.1 team at the World Cup?

so, 77/0 at stumps with Harris making 52 of these.

DRS one of toughest parts of Test cricket: Khawaja

I had not thought about a Harris/Wade swap. We will know a little more later today when AUS bat.

There could be a lot riding on the Khawaja / Harris partnership 🏏

I have not heard if S. Smith will be available for the 4th Test. If he doesn’t play, I think ENG will be Ashes favorites.

Are England now Ashes favourites?

Well stated! There are many positives (as you mentioned) in the AUS lineup that came out of the 3rd Test. If Smith returns, the scoring confidence returns too. 🏏

Australia need not panic, the Ashes are there to be won

“Australia has somehow enraged the forces of destiny,…” 😢 Excellent piece….I, too, have often wondered if chance definitely tilts against AUS in these tight classics!

Why is Australia cursed to lose the classics?

Thanks for the Cricvizanalyst site! They also stated:
“According to our Expected Runs and Wickets model an average team batting in those conditions, against that bowling would’ve scored 163 for 7.23 wickets lost. Australia have slightly over-performed in terms of runs with 179, & slightly underperformed in terms of wickets.”

Warner's ugly but crucial Ashes innings

yes, Scott, I agree….ENG comfortably. Rain probably saved AUS and the series being tied. Smith’s loss will be huge.

The Ashes: England vs Australia, third Test preview and prediction

This is really a valid Q esp. when you see the same mistakes/judgements made time and time again. If the players and coaches learned anything from Perth, it was that ball retention is paramount….esp. against a team like NZ who seem to score every time the ball is kicked to them. Another point “forgotten” in the 2nd match was presence at the breakdown….basically it was comparatively ‘absent’. So, I agree: “why are the Wallabies such slow learners?”

Now the dust has settled, what really went wrong?

This “fragility”, “energy down”, “bad luck” etc etc are thrown out as excuses for disappointing performances by the Wallabies, SR teams etc time and time again. I believe a team psychologist would benefit the players. The other ‘reasons’ for head-scratching cheese/chalk performances over the years comes down to inexplicable coaching strategies, AND the most important fact of life, AUS rugby does NOT have any depth in top-line players. Every now and again the AUS teams will eck out a win against a more favored opponent, but there is no consistency. The Bled. Cup should be terminated because it is a one-sided farce and ultimately detrimental to rugby psyche in Australia. NZ rugby has been all over AUS rugby for over 100 years. They have been the best team in the world for yonkers and have established an envious system of player culture and performance that AUS has never matched and never will. It would be good for rugby for AUS to be playing more against other Pacific Nation teams and restrict games against NZ to the Rugby Championship. Amen!

Now the dust has settled, what really went wrong?

yes, you are right. Short-pitched bowling at chin/neck/head height seems to be ok. Keeping the status quo after the Phil Hughes tragedy, is summed up by the ICC statement that nothing will change (https://www.cricket.com.au/news/bouncer-crackdown-unlikely-according-to-icc/2014-12-01)!

Australia should not fight Jofra Archer with fire

Interesting comments from AUS coach: https://www.cricbuzz.com/cricket-news/109474/australia-wont-get-sucked-into-a-bouncer-war-says-langer

Australia should not fight Jofra Archer with fire

Yes….his Test batting av. is close to 30!

Australia should not fight Jofra Archer with fire

Yes, Ronan, sage advice! If AUS bowlers retaliate then the situation becomes worse, with additional players injured and psychologically damaged. Basically unlimited numbers of short-ball bowling makes Test cricket different to the white-ball formats. I am concerned that more mortal injuries may ensue if regulations about short-pitch bowling are slow to be enacted. I am seriously concerned that Steve Smith may not pad up again. If Test cricket continues with thuggery “chin music”, then it becomes a blood sport. Parents will acknowledge the dangers and move their children away from cricket to a safer sport.

Australia should not fight Jofra Archer with fire

oh, in reply to “With the Bledisloe Tests both poles apart, what did we really learn?” ANS = nothing.

With the Bledisloe Tests both poles apart, what did we really learn?

When you have not won the Bled. Cup for 20-odd years, doesn’t it come to reason that it makes no sense continuing such a one-sided farce? The constant and predictable defeats have damaged the Wallaby psyche, not to mention the AUS rugby fans. You can only be a whipping boy for so long! No wonder AUS rugby is losing fans/patronage/$/patience and hope…..and young talent looks to AFL, NRL, soccer etc.

With the Bledisloe Tests both poles apart, what did we really learn?

Hello Nic…..just watched the highlights of the Wales-Eng match and wanted to say well done and congratulations on the new rankings! Wales have been the best team this past 12 months and I think they are favored to take it all in Japan! 👍

The age-old problem at the heart of another lacklustre Wallabies performance

Exactly, the neck area where Smith was struck contains vital nerve bundle complexes along with carotid arteries and jugular vein. Vascular trauma can lead to cerebral embolism. This impact is not merely a neck muscular contusion. Furthermore, Smith seems to have experienced quite an explosive concussive force. All serious stuff!

“You’ll thank me later in life”

Yes, I agree. The S. Smith injury, along with multiple body/head blows suffered by Australian batsmen (mainly from one bowler) should be setting off alarms re the safety of cricket as it is currently played. I would be surprised that some cricketing body (ICI??) (CA?? etc) doesn’t initiate a rule/penalty relating to head high bowling. In the US, NFL and College football players are thrown out of the game for “targeting”, a helmet on helmet collision, because of dangers of serious concussion and permanent brain injury. The perennial silence and nodding/smiling encouragement surrounding “chin music” from fast bowlers needs serious revision if another Hughes death occurs, or if S. Smith’s batting days are over!

Who has the ascendancy after the second Ashes Test draw?

“Cummins currently has a personal-best 914 ranking points, equalling the highest number that any Australian bowler has ever achieved.” Absolutely deserved; same with S. Smith. Fingers crossed that he plays again in this series.

Smith rises to second on Test batting charts

The Wallabies need a sports psychologist to assist combating these perennial (weekly) reversals in performance. If, like most teams, they already have one, then they need to find someone else!

The age-old problem at the heart of another lacklustre Wallabies performance

Yes, a complete 180 degree turnaround. The AUS backline lacked pace; the forwards lacked 80 minute + intensity; players did not seem to understand vital tactics such as retaining possession and eliminating senseless kicking. They appeared defeated psychologically….away ground where they have not won for x years, hostile crowd, poor weather, chasing a seemingly poisoned chalice that none of the players has successfully held, etc. The team as a whole gave the impression that they wanted to be anywhere but Auckland. These Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde performances keep repeating themselves and do not bode well for Tokyo.

The Wrap: Normal order restored in Bledisloe Cup whitewash

Just watched the highlights. Can someone tell me why Warner is in the slips? A competent slip fielder would have ENG 6 down. 🏏
