Another day, another clean sheet for Mark Schwarzer, who didn’t have to make a save all game. I thought Coyne and Milligan looked quite solid.

The fullbacks got into the game more in the second half. Good opportunistic strike from Carney. He seems to have learnt from that wasted chance in Kunming. (By the way, my friend sent me an SMS during the first half saying that he was terrible. I couldn’t work out why. Any answers?)

Culina’s distribution is second-to-none in Australian soccer, and he always makes himself available. Nice bicycle kick too. Didn’t really notice Jedinak, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Sterjovski was pretty quiet, except for the goal. Of course, that is a bit like saying someone is non-violent, except for that time they murdered someone.

Nice to see Holman not be absolutely terrible. Showed the usual work-rate, and his passing wasn’t bad. He even got a shot on target! We probably shouldn’t have booed when his name was read out pre-game. (I didn’t boo, but I did find it amusing.)

Kewell seemed to be playing within himself, as if he didn’t want to pick up an injury with qualification already assured. Still got an assist, though.

Does anyone watch Celtic play on a regular basis? I’m just wondering if MacDonald is similarly wasteful for them, except that he gets a lot more chances so it doesn’t matter as much.

Grella didn’t really stand out. Then again, he didn’t have to. North got pulled wide a lot, but he was just following his man, and he looked as solid as Coyne. Wish Carle had gotten more game time (and judging by the cheers when he came on, so did most of the crowd).

Despite the euphoria, Socceroos remain cautious

Totally agree jimbo.

I don’t believe that the Socceroos have the technical ability to control a game by being expansive and attacking. Their best chance is to be (somewhat) defensive and contain the opposition. And what does political correctness have to do with anything?

Verbeek proves he was right man for job

“If it was a World Cup where only the best teams got there – based on FIFA rankings maybe? =) – would that be “fairer” than regional qualification?”

It would definitely be fairer. Not that the confederations would ever agree to it.

Running the rule over our Golden Green and Golds

He should have kept his mouth shut and let us figure it out for ourselves. And given that this is the man who once inflicted long-term injuries on two Liverpool players in the same game, I don’t think anyone would have seen his tackle as out of the ordinary.

Lucas Neill did a Becks and got away with it

Something to do with Kerry Packer I think. Was it an offer to produce the football version of World Series Cricket?

The Professor is killing football with kindness

While it would be nice to see the All Whites do well, I feel that any Kiwi success would delay what I really want to happen: the splitting of the AFC into a West Asian and an Asia-Pacific region (including Oceania). I don’t feel that Oceania should remain a separate confederation.

All Whites' turn to shine on the world stage

Oh dear Billy,

Getting detached from reality are we? Don’t worry, it’s okay to dream. Let us know when you’re ready to come back to Planet Earth.

MVDave –

The England football team could yet lose in an embarrasing manner … theere are many matches still to play before the WC final. Keep the faith.

England's disgraceful in T20 shock loss to Netherlands

Dan –

I wasn’t being serious (which I stated), but having said that, the importance of a game can come from the occasion (knockout stage of a major tournament, one point away from WC qualification, etc.) as well as the opposition and our history with them. Or are you saying that the cricket World Cup final would not be important if Australia was playing the Netherlands as opposed to a traditional rival like England?

And you seem not to rate the importance of the Asian Cup, which is the Socceroos’ only realistic chance to win a tournament, so it seems pretty important. I just find it weird that you would only care if we played Japan or Korea at sometime during the tournament. (What about Iraq? That’s a legitimate rivalry, surely.)

You accept the Japan game is important because of the past, but does that mean that the match at the World Cup was not important because we hadn’t played them before?

Of course the Qatar game didn’t get the ratings of SoO, it was on pay-TV at 2:00 in the morning.

Pressure's on Pim no matter what the result

Speak for yourself pothale. I thought this was hilarious. 🙂

That should read: “So true. Thank (insert name of appropriate deity here) … and the Qatari conspirators (alledgedly) that they’re not.”

Time for Pim to add the missing pieces

I don’t think players lose their touch during their career (with the possible exception of Nicola Berti … alledgedly). However, players do lose their pace.

David makes a good point about one-trick ponies with blessed with pace only. Whether or not it applies to the English Mrdja is another matter altogether.

Owen's decline shows pace is no guide

Only tangentially relevant to the article, but if you’ve got something to say, then say it, NO MATTER WHAT IT IS. I like that. 🙂

Socceroos to go all out in World Cup quest

Yes, that’s soccer’s problem. Too many countries play it. Why did the English have to spread everywhere they went? It could have been a localised, marginalised game that 95% of the world knew nothing about, like gridiron or hurling. Damn.

Sorry, couldn’t resist. I’ll be serious now. If soccer can’t provide you with what you want, that’s fine. But it’s really a matter of personal taste.

Tony – Yes, the Roos have done fantastically well, but credit must also go to AFC officials for ensuring that Asia got four automatic WC spots when possibly they don’t deserve it. Not that I’m complaining.

The Bear –

No, of course not. I should have explained myself better. I’m talking about the general opinion that Australia will get killed in the WC next year (by some top side like Argentina) if they play like they have been so far.

Socceroos don't need to win pretty, says Kewell

As referred to in the article, the argument that the standard of officiating needs to be the same from the top to the bottom is rubbish. I’m happy if my pub team gets ONE assistant referee for our games.

By not acting on goal-line technology, FIFA are crossing the line

At what point was it decided that Australia needs to play an expansive, attacking game to beat the top sides? The Socceroos would get slaughtered if they tried to open up the game against a more skillful team. If you want to see the Socceroos play joga bonito successfully, you’ll have to wait for better players to come through the system. I don’t like that anymore than you do, but that’s just the way it is.

Socceroos don't need to win pretty, says Kewell

Um, Kurt?

“I for one love Australian Football, and I understand that some people like soccer also. Just imagine for a moment the hue and cry from you socceristas if someone had posted an article like this bagging out soccer on the day of a major WC qualifier.”

No-one has so far defended rugby league. Why do you think that is the case?

Oh, and it’s not fear and loathing for Australian sports, it’s disgust at what the game of rugby league has become.

State of Origin, I forgot it was on!

What happens when a big-name coach comes in? Hopefully he is good, but eventually he leaves and a new coach has to be found. A-League clubs are unlikely to be able to find the finance required to keep a top-level coach for a period long enough so that he leaves some kind of legacy.

What happens when you develop a top-class academy? It’s there, permanently. If you decide to hire a big name-coach as well in the future, he will have good players and assistants to work with because the system developed them.

The Professor is killing football with kindness

Style is only a requirement for Brazil and their demanding fans. Everyone else just wants to win. Especially when the game is being played in the desert.

And his never-ending movement would have given away his unit’s position to the enemy.

SOS, Captain Verbeek: The yellow submarine’s going down on the Sea of Viduka

“The truth is that a coach of an A-League club will clue in to this eventually.”

When I was watching the Australia-Kuwait game I thought that if Viteslav Lavicka (sp?) was watching then he would have picked up some great ideas on how to deal with A-League opposition. While I abhor the thought of Sydney FC having any success, if it lead to faster development of the entire league then I wouldn’t mind … too much.

How two drubbings could change Australian football

Brian –

Fair enough, but he’d be saying that sort of thing in the media regardless of what he actually believes.
