Reds should go hard for Giteau

As always a very insightful and well written article Nic.

I completely agree that constantly playing out of position and this unique ‘style’ of play leaves those in gold looking bamboozled. A return to a more standard coaching approach along with picking players in their actual position will make a significant improvement.

Also the drop in skill I suspect is directly related. A golfer in the PGA still needs to work on his swing to keep at the top of his game. If a rugby player is having to learn new complex roles that contradict his previous training and experience than this leaves little time to hone those basic skills. The entire training session would be spent trying to teach a 10 where to stand on both sides of the wing depending on the attack matrix.

Why the answers for Australian rugby are blowin’ in the wind

Michael Cheika's mixed selections for Italy

Kenya and Hong Kong have played about 5 times previously including 2 games last year I believe. One in Nairobi and the return in Hong Kong which HK won both games.

Completely agree Tragic,
Some negative comments where it feels like people expected Thorn to take a team that has been 3rd last on the ladder (or abouts) for the past 5 years and all of a sudden within a season be in the finals. Thorn has shown promise in QLD Country and has, like it or not, stood by his commitment regarding holding individual players to expectations.
Now the Reds are bring in some great quality assistants and McGahan in the academy.. I applaud the decision and continue to support them..

The Wallabies irk me

Izack Rodda re-signs with Reds and Wallabies

Hi Lion,

I agree and even see the same thing here in Hong Kong. Mini’s and juniors are full of kids running around on Saturday mornings with the parents on the sideline nursing coffee and hangovers.. but as the kids get older they start to disappear into other endeavors.

Once training stops being something you do after school and becomes something you have to attend after uni or work the dedication required increases. This is where rugby needs to find ways to keep the pathways open.

Clubs need to be well managed with quality training facilities and coaches to compete against the latest crossfit or other healthy sporting alternative.

Too many clubs are still applying 1980’s training techniques (because that is when the under 16’s or 19’s coach last played) such as running laps around the field and hitting a tackling bag.. Training at these levels needs to be brought up to speed with the top level to make it more interesting and enjoyable for a generation that demand it

What would I know, Australian rugby? I am just a rookie

Agree with a number of points Fionn

Isnt it a pleasing to have a number of locks that can operate at international level.

I also believe Arnold and Coleman would be the optimal starters but I would opt for Rodda over Simmons. Simmons has seen a revival in SR this season in his set piece but with Rodda having just turned 22 I feel he brings more aggression to to tight channels and will only continue to get better with the experience at the top level.
