Tis better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

I thought we did that before the RWC started and replaced it with the 2027 cue?

The Wrap: What will the Wallabies' external season review reveal that we don’t already know?

Interesting continuation on the theme of Paul Suttor’s article yesterday about the similarities between Wests Tigers and the Wallabies, which was really enjoyable reading for someone who supports both.
The other similarity is the departure of Eddie’s namesake Alan (Jones) from his stint at the Tigers (maybe they were still Balmain back in those days?).
Like Eddie, Alan was full of all the reasons that it was everybody else’s fault and like Eddie he failed to accept that his job was to coach the team to win football matches. That was the key metric they were judged by and whether they like to accept it or not, their failure to do so was why their services were no longer required.

'Load of rubbish': Eddie tees off on 'red herring' excuse for Wallabies' RWC flop, rejects Hoops issue, Lions link

Thanks Brett, nice summary and happy off season to you too.
I think all of these little bits of Eddie put together make up the big picture of what is now wrong with him as a coach.
I think Eddie Jones is now all about Eddie Jones and not the team that he is coaching. Everything has to be about Eddie – the selection dramas, the training dramas, the on field under performance, the post match presser dramas and then the cycle is repeated for the next match.
TBH, if it weren’t so destructive, it would be funny.

The joy of Rugby World Cup celebrations only ruined by Eddie Jones’ final act

I noted with interest over the weekend that the negotiations to lure Angus Crichton to the Wallabies have been terminated. Who can blame the guy?
But what particularly peaked my interest in the SMH report was this:
The relationship between Crichton’s agent and the Rugby Australia hierarchy was so sour that Rawlings engaged a proxy agent, David Shand, to deal with RA chairman Hamish McLennan and head of contracting Toby Duncan directly

So the saviour of Australian rugby, the man who won’t quit, the man whose business skills are a legend in his own mind is so intolerable to negotiate with that a guy who would have been a genuine asset to Australian rugby has been lost to us – presumably permanently.
Yep, that’s the guy I wan leading my organisation.

The World Cup Wrap: France 2023 got a final befitting the host nation - imperfect, baffling and historic

As an aside to Eddie’s coaching prowess, I do believe he was also the coach of the Wallaroos. To the best of my knowledge he had absolutely nothing to do with them whilst he was busy destroying the Wallabies and they have just racked up possibly their best win ever.
Maybe there’s a lesson there on how Eddie should coach?

One down one to go.

Eddie Jones quits as Wallabies coach - 'Sometimes you have to eat s--t for others to eat caviar'

I am so sick to death of hearing Jones, and McLennan, say they accept responsibility for this disaster. They do not!
They are both still make excuses for themselves and not accepting responsibilities.
The bottom line is McLennan gambled on Jones and Jones gambled on a ludicrous and ultimately disastrous youth policy. Had it worked – sure, give ‘em jobs for life. It didn’t. It spectacularly and disastrously didn’t. And when you gamble like that and it fails so badly you pay for it – by losing your job.
And that’s what taking responsibility means. Admitting you got it wrong and paying the price. Neither of them is doing that and until they do I don’t believe that Australian rugby can move on.

'I'm so pissed off': Eddie open to walking away from Wallabies if it suits RA, sticks knife into Hoops, Quade

The appointment of bloviating Eddie Jones was a fundamental error

For which McLennan must now pay the price. His position is untenable. He was responsible was hiring Jones for this RWC and it has been a disaster. He has to go. You cannot make a mistake of that magnitude and expect to keep your job.

Chasing Headlines, Missing Marks: Why Hamish McLennan can’t remain as Rugby Australia Chairman

Thanks Spiro, really good analysis.
The statement that Eddie Jones is arguing that he inherited a squad that could not win the 2023 RWC tournament, is the wall of defense for Jones and RA. It think it fundamentally incorrect and an excuse that should be challenged and not be allowed to become a justification for this disastrous campaign.
RA and Jones must be held accountable for this complete and utter humiliation.

SPIRO ZAVOS: Eddie Jones' coaching flaw is his belief that rugby is the same game as league

That bench front row is a real concern – 6 caps between them. I hope the game is well and truly in the bag before the run ons are subbed.

CONFIRMED: Wallabies' two-decade first for RWC opener as Eddie explains Donaldson's selection

In a crowded field, the maul has been the least impressive aspect of the Wallaby’s play this season, IMO.

but then another player would also have had to be dropped.

Easy – Vunivalu.

Exclusive: Eddie to spring huge No.15 shock to start World Cup as Donno's 'natural game' gives him an edge

Lost in translation sounds like a real possibility Jez. As there is no 15 in league, maybe Ryles just didn’t know what Eddie wanted him to do with him.

Exclusive: Eddie to spring huge No.15 shock to start World Cup as Donno's 'natural game' gives him an edge

Makes zero sense to play a 6:2 bench and have our best utility back not even in the squad.

I like Petaia at 13 (think he and Kerevi could make a good combination) but the the way his defence was exposed by the French makes you realise just how valuable Ikitau’s defence is.

'We've got a few out': Slipper set to miss RWC opener as Eddie opens up on 'fascinating experiment' campaign

Plus he is too inaccurate. Too often runners have to check to catch the ball above or behind them.

Hit the line with Bell, then Skelton, then Kerevi. That should bend it.

Agree Hoy. I think it’s really hard to assess NFJ as a half back. Technically, I think there were better halfbacks than him, e.g. Whittaker and Slattery, but what he brought to the team in terms of leadership was invaluable. So, if you assess his whole contribution to the team, then I’d say he was a better player than the halfbacks of his era.

Greatest XV: 'Like reffing in a train station': Sublime skills and scathing sledges sum up Australia's top No.9

Which is usually related to the 13 penalties and one or two cards they have given away during the match. Discipline is simply not acceptable and is just not improving. France scored a staggering 15 points from penalties! That is just incredible in the modern game.

World Cup Top 10 Power Rankings: Wallabies' missing piece, ABs still possess super power, and why France edge Ireland

Thanks Brett. Great article and insights as always.
The only theory I cam come up with as to why the openside winger is stationed so far infield in defence is to allow the opposition winger to score untouched and hence eliminate the possibility of a yellow/red card for the cover defence.

Enjoy the opportunity, debutants – I’m not sure how many more there will be as Wallabies enter must-win mode

If the objective was to not show too much before the World Cup, then I’d say it was mission accomplished.

'We didn't want to show too much': Is Eddie bluffing in a high stakes game of rugby poker?

Yep, beyond comprehension for mine that Hodgey isn’t in the squad. Way better value on the bench than Donno I reckon.

Wallabies CONFIRMED: Eddie makes four changes in final pre-World Cup hit out, Suli and Foketi named

Great to see Fines-Leleiwasa being given a shot. Hope he gets decent minutes.

I fear everyone has missed the big picture on this one.
This is Owen Farrell!
Why wasn’t the Welsh player charged for leading with his head?

'Mockery', 'broken game', 'laughing stock': Rugby rages as red card reversal clears Owen Farrell for World Cup

I get that he didn’t want to take the phone call, and I think a senior player is allowed that latitude to show his disappointment and frustration.
But to continue to refuse to talk to anyone is just petulance and quite frankly crazy IMO. We still have 5 more game until just the end of the pool games. The odds of Gordon and/or Donaldson picking up an injury in that time are non trivial. After all he’s been through to rehabilitate himself, why he wouldn’t want to hang in there for one last shot is beyond me. And TBH, I’m more that a bit pi**ed off with him. Because of his petulance the backup backup is now Foley.
