What about the number of years making finals as well as overall winning percentage for each of the coaches named and bevo? Bulldogs have had the talent to be dominate yet I can’t remember a season (even the premiership season) where they ever looked dominate. Instead they seem to fight to make the 8 most years.

I’ve though the dogs should have moved on from Bevo for a number of years now. He seems to lose certainly players and makes mind boggling selection and position changes. Sometimes seems to be trying to prove how genius he is rather playing to strengths.

If the suspensions is for an act that makes an opposition player miss game time (subbed off or missing following games) the player is ruled ineligible.

Historically both Grundy and Gawns best personal seasons have been when tucked the vast majority of the time. Both are much better in yucks than forwards. Neither have played well when ruck minutes are reduced.

As much as it sucks that it’s hard to win a flag in the comp and that it seems to rotate between only a few, it’s still better than the old VFL big 4 who took turns buying flags.
No matter how a competition is structured you’ll always have clubs who just shoot themselves in the foot and make bad choices and good clubs who do so a lot less.

If we culled clubs that needed extra support St kilda would have gone decades ago, along with a few others. TV rights would be much smaller, player pay would shrink, and clubs that are on the margins now would start to struggle. And could possible lead to further contraction. At worst that wouldn’t happen but we’d be back to the VFL and the big 4.

So GWS and the Suns got a whole $5-6m more/year than a couple Vic clubs have been getting. Are you going to seriously argue the extra money from the broadcast rights is worth only $10-12m/year? I’ve never claimed ‘it all came from the new teams’ but I can guarantee some of it did and I’d be willing to bet it’s way more than what it costs to support the new teams.
How much are a game full of ads worth? Even the poorest performing game. Now multiple that by 23 extra games a year.

The money from extra tv rights is far far greater than the cost of ‘propping up’ the 2 new clubs.
Also based on your metric of clubs being ‘propped up’ at least three Melbourne based clubs should go first. It’s one thing to ‘prop up’ a club during its formative years (10-20 years) it’s another to still be doing it 150 years and counting.

How many years did it take to get those facilities that should have been priority one and in place day 1? Suns list early on was very one dimensional. Kept drafting the same type of mid flanker over and over despite glaring needs elsewhere. Made McKenna the scapegoat for issues that started off field. Brought in Rodney Eade, does that even need explanation?
Bit less time with the woe is us media act and more work behind the scenes fixing the issues with the club would have the Suns further ahead. Under Cochrane watch the suns started bad and have never progressed. The rot starts at the head.

Not necessarily. Some times coaches can only get a team to a certain point. It takes a different voice to push them father. It’s farvrarer that a coach comes into a bottom struggling side and takes them all the way … unless they are given a lot longer than most coaches get these days.
Some coaches are good at developing the basics and struggle with the finer points, the 1%era that can take a team from fighting to making finals and a contender. Some are the opposite. They don’t do well developing youth but given a side that has talent and some years under their belt and they can install game tactics and plans to make the more successful. And yet other coaches are somewhere in the middle. Might be able to get a side into finals but not quite good enough to go all the way.
Smart coach and clubs surround themselves with assignments who can fill the gaps.

Same thing used to be said of Brisbane. Was said about Geelong too. Sort the off field stuff out and players will stay and will want to come.

The difference between GWS and the Suns are in the way each was set up.
Suns started without proper facilities for years. Look at Brisbane once they finally after over a decade finally got proper training facilities. Players became fitter and stopping wanting to leave and others actually wanted to go to Brisbane. No professional player wants to train in outdated, underfunded and/or tin sheds.
The Suns concessions were one draft. GWS had two drafts. The is a massive difference. Two drafts give a club a bigger cross section of players to choose from. A single draft can often be weak in one position or one type of player.
Suns biggest issue has been Tony Cochran. He lasted way way too long.
The AFL screwed the Suns from the get go. New clubs should never enter the comp everything in place from day 1. Not years down the track. Hopefully they don’t half arse it with Tassie.
