Fantastic article Jaymz. Some brilliant ideas suggested. If only the FFA could think long-term like this.

The new key for A-League expansion

I’ve put $20 on us to beat Germany at $7. Park the bus and a lucky goal from a set piece and it possible.

Weakened Germany are not unbeatable

Now that Barca have Villa, they wont be needing Ibrahimovic any more…

I need a target man, says Lavicka

Maybe Dukes will watch his good mate Skoko play and feel he wants to join in. If the season was already in, he could take up a guest player contract or whatever that new rule is this season where you can sign someone for 12 weeks

Tell us, Dukes, are you playing or not?

I think if any Australian football is going to be shown on FTA TV, it should be on One HD for a few reasons:

1) Shows on One are also advertised on Channel 10, which is 2 channels of advertising

2) Channel 10 and One HD, being mainstream, get more viewers than SBS

3) One has taken a keen interest in football since it’s inception by showing the Serie A and Bundesliga, both with their own highlights show. One also showed the FIFA club world cup, and 10 did the Sydney FC v LA Galaxy game a while back.

4) I have noticed that Channel 10 has given football more interest. When I watch Sports Tonight the highlights and news of football is always very thorough, compared to if you watch 7 or 9 sports news where they often only show 1 or 2 goals from a game that had 5. On top of this, One HD and Channel 10 refer to our sport as “football”, where as 7 and 9 call it “soccer”

5) With Analogue TV signals being turned off, everyone will have digital TV and access to One.

6) One HD have their own Australian football show in World Football News

Can SBS raise the A-League's profile?

Goalkeeper: Schwarzer. Full stop.

Picking the Premier League team of the year

Number 5: Corner kick awarded if no-one touches the ball

Law 15 of FIFA Laws.
A throw-in is a method of restarting play.
A goal cannot be scored directly from a throw-in.

You Are The Ref: test your football knowledge!

Good point Brian!

I didn’t actually realise how strong a team we potentially have available. Thanks!

This starting 11 would be great to see in action, as the majority of these players will be keen to impress Verbeek to get a world cup spot.

Also, love to see that you’ve put Vukovic as the No.1. With the form he’s in at the moment, Verbeek would be stupid not to pick him!

Strong Socceroos 11 to face Kuwait?

9 goals, 2 games. Who said our matches were boring to watch :]

Central Coast Mariners demolish Fury

Ultimate in the sense of the best match-ups to watch. It would be the “ultimate” world cup experience playing these teams and progressing to the knockout stage. I am simply fantasising here.

Of course in reality I would rather us play less exciting games against the weaker teams to make it easier for us to progress.

Socceroos await the luck of the draw

Central Coast better beat the Fury! I hate how we have beat Melbourne 4-0, Brisbane 3-0 and Gold Coast 3-0 (when they used to be good!) already this season, and yet we can’t seem to lift against the teams at the bottom half of the ladder!

It is so frustrating because we obviously have the ability, but we seem to have the attitude that these “lesser” teams are easy beats and not much effort is required to beat them. I sometimes wish Lawrie was a bit harder on the team…

Match-by-match A-League preview

Totally agree Jesse – Verbeek deserves his chance to prove to everyone what he can do. He has earnt it.

Keep Guus away from the Socceroos

Socceroos await the luck of the draw

I see. Well, I am a paying CCM member and I go to Socceroos games in Australia, but I am only 17 so I can’t go to a pub etc to watch their foxtel. There is no way my parents are going to pay for foxtel, so websites like these are the only way I can watch away games. I suppose that they could stop people from paying for foxtel if they can watch the games for free online, but for those with no other option like me, it would be better to keep their interest in football than not watch the games at all, wouldn’t it?

Australia should back All Whites for World Cup

Yeah, i’m not sure about the football community’s standing on these websites. For me, there is no other way I can watch away CCM or Socceroos games…

Australia should back All Whites for World Cup

Danny Vukovic should be the 3rd choice keeper. He is by far the best keepr in the A-League and has international experience with the young roos and olyroos. He is still young and full of potential, so it would be great for him to tag along with the sqaud and get some experience.

Verbeek experiments but Socceroos lack depth

Is it wrong of me to suggest iraqgoals?

Australia should back All Whites for World Cup

There is no doubt that the A-League needs at least some free-to-air coverage, but saying that SBS should be the only network to get the rights is foolish. How much exposure and advertising would people see? People that aren’t already interested in football are less likely to know that an A-League game will be on SBS than say, if the games were on One HD.

Sports on One HD are advertised on Channel 10, and I must say that I believe the 10 Network to have no bias against Australian football. I watch Sports Tonight regularly, and unlike Channel 7 or Channel 9, Channel 10 speak positively about Australian football and very rarely report on the gossip and speculation of any sport. For example, during the Frank Farina sacking, channel 7 and channel 9 news would use negative words and speak in a negative tone of football, where as you got the straight story with all the facts in Sports Tonight’s report.

It needs to also be noted that One HD has already jumped on the football bandwagon with matches and highlights shows from the Serie A and the Bundesliga.

Vote 1: One HD

Why SBS must screen the A-League

Totally agree with you there Koala Bear – Martin Tyler is the perfect balance when it comes to football commentating. He can be pretty funny sometimes too…

Football's barren media landscape

Pippinu,

I see what you’re saying, but surely there must be many more different scenarios for goals scored in football compared to Aussie rules. The fact that a goalkeeper is involved means that once a player is in front of goals and his strike is on target, he is not guaranteed a goal. This brings in the challenge of “beating” the keeper.

If there was no goalkeeper and a goal was worth 6 points, there would just as many scored in football as there are in Aussie rules, but would they be in any way as exciting?

90 Minutes, 90 Emotions

Pippinu,

I was referring the variation of the goals in football in general compared to other sports where you dive over a line in the corner of the field, or kick a ball held in your hands between posts that are 50m in the air. But yes, the goals in Friday’s game were extremely varied:

1) The captain, a defender, scored his first ever A-League goal by kicking it between the legs of not 1, but 2 playes, with the second one being the keeper!

2) A penalty that was saved by the keepers legs, only to be regained and put back in the net.

3) The most hilarious goal in A-League history. That is, if you aren’t a Perth supporter.

90 Minutes, 90 Emotions

My best bet would be OneHD.

Channel 7 has half the AFL, Tennis and swimming.

Channel 9 has exclusive NRL

ABC has the W-League

SBS has football programs, but no leagues.

I think that SBS and ABC would be a bad choice for the A-League as they have much less exposure than the main 3.

OneHD has already jumped on the football bandwagon with the exclusive showing of both the German Bundes Liga and the Italian Serie A. I hope they can expand to the A-League in 2013. This would be a huge boost for football in Australia.

Waiting for the democratisation of Australian Football

Jaymz, I believe this is a great idea, however a slight alteration should be made. The second division of the A-League should have each state represented by a new team, say “Queensland United”, made up from the strongest state-league clubs that merge together. Only about 2 or 3 of the strongest clubs shold merge, as to keep the quality as high as possible.

A new view on a Second Division in the A-league
