Ha ha , i was wrong . Hawthorn did want / take him back. but i think they were wrong to do it. And Damian Barrett is still a ( can’t use the word i want to b/c i’d like this comment published.)

'Contracted player': Lions respond to trade bombshell as Gunston seeks return to Hawthorn

Don’t really want an argument with a fellow Hawthorn supporter , Luke, but … Ryan has shown in his three games that he’s got smarts and ability to play at top level. Hardly “unknown” as you put it. Brisbane certainly thinks he’s good enough. As for Gunston , i’d be surprised if Hawks get two good years out of him. One at the most , i reckon , and that’s if he keeps form and isn’t out injured too much. I suspect taking Gunston back was based more on sentiment than harsh reason, odd as that is in the ruthless world of list management. I’d love to see Gunston and Breust combining for goals as they did so often in the past. Just far from sure they’ll do it in the future. So we’ll have to agree to differ on this , but am sure we’re united in hoping (and expecting?) the Hawks make the Final Eight next year , better than the 10th to 13 th the “experts ” are predicting.

Jack's back: Gunston a Hawk again in dramatic end to Trade Period as Power land targets at the death

Gunston at Brisbane either out of form or injured. Available for Lions’ three Finals this year but not selected. Guessing this at least one of the reasons for wanting out. Fair enough. But Hawthorn swapping the promising Brandon Ryan, 25 , for the six years older Gunston with his best years behind him is a mystery. It doesn’t fit with the rebuilding with young players strategy Hawks were following. As a Hawk supporter i hope Gunston’s return works but i won’t be surprised and will be disappointed if it doesn’t.

Too right, Dingo. And spare a thought for us Hawthorn supporters who had to endure the verbal brain farts of club Pres. Jeff Kennett for far too many years.

'The level of delusion is something else': Eddie McGuire's defence of his disastrous coaching succession plan is ridiculous

Second sentence in this story stars with “According to AFL journalist Damian Barrett…” thus proving the rumours are b.s. Now way would Hawthorn want him , unless he’s happy to play for VFL side Box Hill. Over 30 , patchy form , walked out when the club wanted to keep him = def. not part of the club’s rebuilding scheme.

Hawks also beat Brisbane by 25 points at the G this year as well as C’wood by 32. Interesting that a side that finished 16th. could beat both the eventual top two in the H & A season.

Finals Fix: One quarter from hell couldn't keep the Lions out of the big dance - but another might just cost them the flag

Just like to point out the Hawthorn Damo and Caro accused of tanking early in the season beat both Grand Finalists Brisbane and Collingwood at the G this year. Did any other team do that too?

Finals Fix: The Pies were down and out in the prelim. How they turned it around is the stuff of greatness

Thanks for the laugh , Don. Agree with your Week 1 predictions and your comment on Kane Cornes. Will also add at season start he predicted “my” Hawks would win only six games. Well , they won seven , so not far off but still wrong. Hawks also beat the minor premiers and Flag favourites . (Coincidentally the only match i went to this year travelling from my home 1,300 kms away.)

The Roar's AFL Finals Forecast: Week 1 expert tips, premier, Brownlow, biggest September surprise and more

Pretty crappy of Collingwood selectors to drop John Noble after loyal service for 83 consecutive games. If he doesn’t get to play in this Finals series he’d be entitled to ask for a trade.

AFL News: Bedford a free man with suspension overturn, Dogs urged to trade star as bombshell Hawks offer looms

The Roar’s readership is i’m sure a lot younger than old fart me, so a reminder that in my long ago youth the eight (pre- AFL) VFL teams that missed the Final Four played off in a night time competition for the appropriately named Night Premiership. Played at grounds with inferior lighting and with a white(!) ball. It didn’t garner a huge amount of interest but worth noting in the context of this current issue , nobody objected to it.

That local footy 'every team plays finals' drama is an absolute farce - but not for the reason everyone thinks

Living in NSW i don’t hear all the AFL gossip , but the only ones i heard going on about tanking were Damien Barrett and Caroline Wilson, neither of which “experts” i have much time for. I also don’t know why there is such a fuss about draft picks. Plenty of players taken early have not delivered , while other blokes taken as pick 50-something have turned out highly-valued players. Even an early pick doesn’t guarantee success if the rest of the squad not much help.

The AFL has more pressing issues to worry about than tanking - so let's stop talking about it

Yes , Charlie . that’s why i felt obliged to help Hawthorn pay Clarko the $900,000 he got for not working for them anymore. So i spent $78 on a beanie and a cap at the Hawks’ shop and i hope that helps. The beanie proved useful a couple of weeks ago when i went to the G with a group of Collingwood supporters. (And it’s 100% wool, bonus.)

Dimma the Sun: Gold Coast unveil triple-premiership Tiger as new coach

You all picked the Pies last week and now you all pick the Dogs this week. Slow learners?

The Roar's AFL expert tips and predictions Round 22: Are the Pies set to keep on falling?

Seeing you ask , Don … upgrade Bellerive and York Park rather than the spending squillions on the new stadium most Tasmanians don’t want , and the Devils can play half their home games in Hobart and half in Launceston. With Tassie’s North-South divide – silly as it seems to us mainlanders- the Northerners won’t go to Hobart for games.

The Suns botch another coaching exit after hanging Stuart Dew out to dry

You’re a very naughty boy , Bretto. Go and stand in the corner and no dessert for you tonight.

Not so fascinating , Cameron , i suggest. Gold coast population has large proportion of retirees and transients. The retirees from Vic. continue to support their old club. The transients are just that. There might be some younger families and single people supporting the Suns , but not nearly enough. See how a few weeks ago when the suns played the Pies there were more C’wood supporters there than Suns fans. Gold Coast Titans sitting 11th out of 17 teams and Suns 14th out of 18 . And that’s around where they’ll both stay for the forsseeable , i reckon.

The Suns botch another coaching exit after hanging Stuart Dew out to dry

Quite so , Don. I’m still steaming at her comment early this season when she called Hawthorn’s rebuilding process “tanking.” And that pompous dill Damien Barett agreed with her. For mine , i’m not too unhappy the club i support is now down the bottom of the ladder. The club that’s won 13 Flags all in my lifetime. And i’d even prefer a Saints Flag before another one.

Not the entire team , Luke. Uzzie was off on a drinking binge.

The spirit of cricket was murdered in cold blood by sunburnt thugs - and the game might never recover

Sadly , andrew , millions of Poms do take them seriously since they watch them on television. If they weren’t rating they wouldn’t get advertisers. Doesn’t say much for their viewers’ IQ’s , but there you are.

The spirit of cricket was murdered in cold blood by sunburnt thugs - and the game might never recover

One pertinent incident that’s been overlooked in this latest furore is Robinson’s vulgar obscenity-laden send-off of Uzzie after his 141 at Edgbaston. And Stokes supported him , saying it showed Robinson’s “competitiveness.” Robinson himself called it “passionate.” How was this ever part of the spirit of cricket you pasty Pommy hypocrites? If Robinson had apologised the next day , saying he’d got carried away in the moment , fair enough. Or if at the time he’d said “Well played , but good to get you out,” also fine. But no , he doubled down and his hero captain excused him. (At least Joe Root had the civility to pat Uzzie on the shoulder. As a fair player he was most likely embarrassed at that tool Robinson’s ugly outburst.)

The spirit of cricket was murdered in cold blood by sunburnt thugs - and the game might never recover

Caroline Wilson needs to pull her head in. Her pronouncements often way out of order. Early this year both she and that other pontificator Damien Barrett said the Hawks were tanking when they’re obviously re-building with the youngest and least experienced team in the League. Hawks don’t need more high draft picks anyway – they’ve got the right players , they just have to develop them and sign them up on long-term contracts.

AFL News: Cripps hits back at separate hotel claims, Scott slams 'confusing; tribunal, Zorko banned for eye contact

Yes , Maxy , but after driving to Hobart and watching the game , they could well be driving tired . especially after a night game. Not good.

Tasmania doesn't need a new stadium - shame on the AFL for forcing us into building one

Unbelievable b.s. from Barrett and Wilson to accuse Hawthorn of tanking. The young mids have been going ok without Mitchell and O’Meara and getting valuable experience making them develop quickly. Hawks have also NOT had a CHF since the Gunston they were counting on left unexpectedly and against Hawks’ wishes , and no FF all year with Lewis injured in pre-season. The young Hawks are improving without winning and will make the eight next year .
