Yep read that story.
The NSW CEO got off very lightly if that’s the only level of scrutiny applied.
He can count himself lucky everything NSW related is buried under the RA banner.

The Wrap: Spare a thought for injured players as Super Rugby’s two rutting rhinos deliver an epic final preview

Yeah agree Harry.

Most Super club’s finances aren’t in good shape to my understanding. I think the Tahs posted a $4million plus loss this past fin year yet no-one seems to be talking about why and how that came to be.

My broader point is there seems to be plenty of posters just happy to dance on the grave of a Club that’s worked hard to grow the game in a non-traditional rugby market.

I’d much prefer everyone pulling together in Aus rugby rather than tearing each other apart.

The Wrap: Spare a thought for injured players as Super Rugby’s two rutting rhinos deliver an epic final preview

Another terrific weekly wrap Geoff, thanks.

Good weekend of rugby. The Kiwi games were particularly good and importantly big crowds on hand to enjoy it. It seems a long time ago since a decent crowd turned up for any Aus games.

The Force played well and looked good against the Drua. The recent additions to the playing roster have been good ones. Not sure what happens to the Drua when they travel? They seem to be missing Frank Lomani quite a bit.

I really enjoy your regular reference to the human element of rugby. So many stories behind what we see during the 80 minutes.

Lastly great reminder about the important work of the Orange Academy in Vic. This has been a terrific partnership with the Rebels.

Whilst many on here seemingly enjoy sticking the boot into the club they’ve worked hard to build pathways and partnerships that are important and should be celebrated. Long may the Orange Academy continue.

Good game.

Kevin Foote and Nick Stiles deserve a lot of credit for the Rebels remaining competitive this year. The off-field problems would have derailed most teams by now.

'Perhaps it's surgery': Reds win ugly over Rebels to keep top four hopes alive as big-name Wallabies forced off

Yeah I tend to agree the Reds deserve to be rewarded with Wallaby jerseys based on performances thus far. Their forwards in particular.

I think it’s also worth noting the context of the stress the Rebels players have been enduring with the off field stuff. They’re well positioned on the table, which is remarkable and demonstrates significant resilience.

Many of their players should also be in the mix and I hope Carter Gordon is one of them.

Many of the Brums will also get included but it was strange to see their pack get outmuscled by the Drua last week. Valetini, Cale and Reimer have been their best. Ikitau should also be there.

Five things: The Reds have flipped the script - and it promises to be rewarded at the Wallabies selection table

Adsa I’m guessing a lot of their debt was costs associated with being on the road for two years: 20/21.

With very short notice they had to leave Melbourne and set up camp in other parts of the country for the whole super season.

I can only imagine the costs (potentially several millions of dollars) to house and feed the squad/staff (probably about 40 people) for 4 months each of those years.

Everyone seems to have forgotten this part of the story even though it wasn’t long ago.

The Wrap: Rugby Australia gaslights Rebels staff and why ‘I Can’t Go For That’

Sorry James I gotta agree with Geoff here.

Kevin Foote and the staff would be feeling pretty isolated right now.

He’s shown great leadership in my view. Remarkable the team are still in the finals mix.

I’m not sure why you’re so pro RA and anti the Rebels.

Over the past decade RA have been a mess. I struggle to trust them these days. Your blind faith is admirable.

The Wrap: Rugby Australia gaslights Rebels staff and why ‘I Can’t Go For That’

…..seriously Footy Franks. Bizarre and insincere post. As Geoff said above: goes to character.

How would you be going if you didn’t know where your next pay cheque was coming from? Mortgages and school fees to navigate for the coaches, staff and fringe players.

Not talking about the top talent. They will always find the next contract and many will probably head o/s.

Wow James have you had your Monday morning coffee yet?

Perhaps you can grab one from the café downstairs at RA HQ.

The Wrap: Rugby Australia gaslights Rebels staff and why ‘I Can’t Go For That’

Thanks for the weekly wrap Geoff
The best rugby read each week.

Great to see the Reds win over the Crusaders. The Reds are a tough unit this year, although last time I said that they went and lost to Moana.

The Brums look good but not as clinical as previous seasons. Odd seeing their scrum getting towelled up by the Drua. Luke Reimer probably saved the game for them. He should be a contender for a Wallaby bench spot. I’m not convinced the Brums can beat the top kiwi teams in the finals, despite their great win last week over the Hurricanes.

Really pleased you made the point about the ‘human element’ regarding the Rebels. Kevin Foote and Nick Stiles have been outstanding leaders in awful circumstances. Incredible the team is still in the finals mix given everything they’re dealing with for the players and their own futures.

For some reason many Roarers seem oblivious to the human element and can’t wait to stick the boot in every chance they get.

You must be at a Hospital Cup game.

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Same for the other four clubs too then?

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Probably the same place most rugby supporters are across the five Super clubs: not at Super games.

Canberra crowds are poor but come from a small population base. Brisbane and Sydney crowds a very poor considering they’re our traditional home rugby markets. Barely getting more people than the non traditional markets.

Perth do ok but nothing to get excited about in terms of crowd numbers.

There’s a lot going on in Vic rugby with pathways and a range of initiatives but like everywhere else crowds need to be better at Super games.

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Come on Doc….maybe have a look outside QLD for a change. It’s the biggest growth area in the game. The large Pasifica community in Melb is the engine for the growth primarily.

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Pretty much the same for each Super club. Crowds are rubbish everywhere.

Rebels face more hurdles despite $25m rescue plan, call on RA to show support and reveal hand as court battle looms

Not at all. Stiles is in a very difficult situation.

RA are only making his role more difficult, with very little info shared. Which is just another indicator that they’re keen to shut the Rebels down.

Rebels' Super future hanging on creditors' Friday vote as Rugby Australia set to go against plan

Yep great point ATW.

RA are the masters of spin.

Rebels' Super future hanging on creditors' Friday vote as Rugby Australia set to go against plan

Difficult to know if he’s a legitimate chance of switching codes.

Be a great shame and another black eye for Rugby Australia.

He’s a terrific player and only going to get better.

Wallabies' young gun mulling NRL switch as Rebels' future continues to cloud picture

Bluesfan clearly with RA being a mess (over atleast the past decade) we need people like Geoff providing deeper insight.

Good on him. It’s much needed.

If there was a better run head office (RA) with stronger governance and trust across the rugby ecosystem we’d all have more comfort with the Rebels situation rather than the spin coming out of RA.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

Agree Geoff.

Thats gotta win the lollipop award for comment of the day from Scott.

Beggars belief really.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

Another good weekly wrap Geoff. Thank you.
Terrific games on Saturday in particular and yes Tim Ryan was great to watch.

It’s nice to see a few gun wingers emerge in recent years that aren’t the 110kg prototype. Toole, Lancaster and now Ryan all offer speed and excitement for their team.

Good on you for keeping us in the loop on the Rebels. I value it highly. Without it we’re only left with spin from RA and a couple of their chosen journo’s to control the narrative in their favour.

I have no faith in RA’s behaviour over recent years so won’t cast judgement on the Rebels until we know the full story. At this stage it feels like there’s a lot more to play out.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

That’s true. It’s only now that GWS and the Gold Coast Suns are producing genuine local AFL talent since their inception in 2011. These clubs were long term investments that are still propped up by the AFL.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

Good point Ferret.
Doesn’t really suit RA’s narrative does it.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

You may fail to remember the Rebels had to rebuild from scratch after RA left both the Force and Rebels hanging all through 2017.

It was awful for both Clubs and most of the Rebs staff and players/coaches left due to the ongoing uncertainty. So 2018/19 was a complete rebuild.

Then 2020/21 the Rebels spent two years on the road living out of Melb due to Covid. I can only assume this would have been at huge $$ cost to the Club.

They’re a resilient club that have faced huge challenges the past 5-7 years.

The Wrap: Rebels young gun rockets out of Wallabies contention, and why Samipeni Finau's 'brutal' hit on Edmed was fair game

I’d say there’s a lot more to come out yet James.

Especially around RA’s behaviour during this whole sorry episode. My understanding is that RA sanctioned much of the Rebels approach to keeping the Club running over the past several years.

I value Geoff’s insights. Without them we’ve only got the ‘spin’ from RA.

Not sure why you’re so anti the broader picture.

UPDATE: RA say they were blindsided over Rebels' finances, reject private consortium claim as administrator backs club's survival
