Thoroughly enjoyable article Nick. Thanks for the insight and info.
On your recommendation I watched “Free Solo” the other night. I don’t think I’ve ever been so scared watching anything – let alone a documentary! Amazing film! Thanks for the tip.

Maybe a coaches corner question – BT sticking with Flook out 13 for the biggest game of their season to date, rather than sliding JP in. Do you think this speaks to a healthy development system coming to fruition? Or was JP’s “slump” the driver of leaving him on the wing?

Why Jordan Petaia can be a better rugby player than Israel Folau

Not sure. Perhaps dour?

The Wrap: The Reds ride the bumps all the way to Super Rugby grand final

👍 👍
Very true.
I’ve still mostly been enjoying them though.

BREAKING: Waratahs sack interim head coaches for "failing to meet on-field expectations"

So much gold in that short read. Much appreciated guys.

“Dead Coach Bounce” – love it.

Also nervous about the Reds, but I think they have developed just enough cohesion to get over the line.

Super Rugby tipping week 7: Sacked coach watch

Stan Sport put a Waratah’s special on last night where they interviewed Doorn, Cheika and Tirinui.

Sadly the Doorn interview wasn’t an April fools joke……

BREAKING: Waratahs sack interim head coaches for "failing to meet on-field expectations"

Was working late and saw it last night. Held fire then but it had tp be said Damo.

Excellent work ROAR. Wonderful work. 😛 😛 😛 👍

BREAKING: Waratahs sack interim head coaches for "failing to meet on-field expectations"

I think I understand that NB – can you translate it into Lock for me ? 😁 😛 😛
Even though I’m the size and weight of a modern back, it’s still a bit beyond this school boy tight forward. 👍

Not just making up the numbers: The rise and rise of Len Ikitau

Piru I reckon you and Rhys are on the money with this one.
He’s a genuine contender though so I hope it doesn’t knock his confidence too much.

Not just making up the numbers: The rise and rise of Len Ikitau

Ralston seems a bit quiet to me this year Piru. I thought he was going to light things up after his efforts last year but I can’t say I’ve really seen it.

Not just making up the numbers: The rise and rise of Len Ikitau

Well said Jeznez,
As a Reds supporter this was our plight just a few short years ago – admittedly for different reasons.

Keen to see all teams perform – but improvement has to be the realistic goal.

Last chance saloon for the Waratahs

Geoff – certainly is a “reward for performance”!! Sideways promotions are always frought with risk though aren’t they.

It’s time to pick the Blues. So I’m going home teams all round.

It’s nice to see some variety on the tipping table though – just shows what a great comp (well COMPilation?) this is growing into.

Super Rugby tipping panel, Week 5: Good management and sheer bad luck

Will always bow to your wisdom Nick.
Larkham perhaps a better running example, but I reckon Campbell’s a 15 through and through. I’ve never thought of Larkham of anything but a 10.
I’m no expert but I do think he has a big future.

Why the Brumbies still have reason to smile after their defeat in Canberra

I reckon Campbell is the genuine article. His broken play running – Lathamesque to me. And since he flies a bit under the radar with HP and JP in front of him he’s got a bit of free air to develop his game. I think he’s got a real future in Red and Gold.

Why the Brumbies still have reason to smile after their defeat in Canberra

I had thought you or Brett had said something about that. It was quite noticeable on Saturday.
I guess it’s a start that general play offside is being monitored. Hopefully it will extend to kicks too.

The Wrap: Reds twist the knife for epic win over ailing Brumbies

It was a magnificent run/pass – disappointed to see it called forward when it really deserves to be rewarded.
My biggest issue is, he did everything right IMO -; Hands went back, he was in front of the receiver still when the ball was caught – everything looked legitimate. Surely we want to see play like that in our game – punishing it as a forward pass is a bit of a travesty.

The Wrap: Reds twist the knife for epic win over ailing Brumbies

Brumbies wingers were offside on every kick off. Should have been easy to spot as there were plenty of opportunities to see it.
Same with box kicks

I love that they’re enforcing offside, but consistency around the field needs work.

And consequently where is the poor guy now.
To be fair to Gibson, all Aussie teams were under the pump to perform in an envirnonment that they were struggling in.
But it needed to be done. And the reality is now in front of them.

Rob Penney threw down the gauntlet and NSW Rugby are mad if they take it

Reds subbed TT last two matches – it’s not a coach killer move whether they’re the best or not. If you don’t ever give the youngsters a go in a supported environment they’ll never be ready.
Surely that’s coaching 101?

Rob Penney threw down the gauntlet and NSW Rugby are mad if they take it

I think he said he had another angle – but weird we didn’t.

Overall, despite some errors I thought refs did a good job though.
Glad they’re cracking down on offside. It really does open the game up.

Force struggle with whistle-happy ref

Binge doesn’t have any commercials – it’s all streaming.
It’s not all of Foxtel – but a fair bit of it.

Stan Sport reveals subscription cost ahead of Super Rugby season

Very true

Where it all began to go wrong for the All Blacks

Very good point about the structure of the game changing. I still wonder if Saturday was a bit of an outlier – the Argies were just exceptional across the park. But the inability to grind it out seems to be missing. I know the Abs don’t like to play past 3-4 phases before they kick it away, based on momentum shifting and the data that few tries come after 5 phases, but the discipline of holding the ball, grinding out the yards and “earning the right” are still central tenants that need to be respected. You would hope a few losses would sink in – but I guess it didn’t for us over 4 years! I think they’ll be hot and cold for a while – but I reckon they will be the force they have been soon enough.

Where it all began to go wrong for the All Blacks

Good thoughts Highlander. There is also the inevitable improvement in conditioning, skills and fitness from the other sides which has narrowed the gap, independent of Ab decline.
I think your media argument has some merit. I wonder if the temptation to maintain the Barrett brother storyline means that Jordie and Scott get to sneak in a bit more easily. Both wonderful footballers, but IMO there are other players that could fill those spaces more effectively.

Regardless, an era without cricket scores is something I think we can all look forward to. 🙂

Where it all began to go wrong for the All Blacks

As it should be hey?
Excellent wrap by the way. Thoroughly enjoyed today’s read.
Don’t take this the wrong way, but it’s nice to be able to enjoy the weekend Rugby AND your wrap. Up in till lately it’s all been on your shoulders.????????

The Wrap: A great new broadcast deal for rugby? Depends on who’s telling the story

I reckon ABs have been “rattleable” for a while now, it’s just that most teams have struggled to really take advantage of it.
It’s simple though. A solid line of defense and make your tackles. ABs much prefer broken play. Pumas just gave them nothing to play with.
