As a Dees member, tend to agree with most of these points as it’s been frustrating watching them over the last 12 months. But bog average is a bit dramatic. Reckon they’re still a shoe-in for finals but it’ll be 5th-8th rather than top 4.

There was no shame in losing by 4 points to Port at Port on a wet night with some dubious umpire calls late in the game, but they shouldn’t have lost on the weekend on their home deck with so many areas of their game to be concerned about.

My biggest complaint is the lack of flexibility with the lineup as the match committee blindly has full faith in the ‘premiership heroes’ and playing them despite form/injury concerns rather than taking a horses for courses approach and/or rewarding VFL form.

Goodwin’s inability to respond in-game has always been an issue as well as he just ‘sticks to the game plan’ rather than looking at ways to counter what the opposition might be doing or ways to make us more potent/dangerous as the match progresses. Both finals losses last year were prime examples of that.

All in all, last year showed there’s no premierships being handed out in April/May so hoping some losses mid-season is OK as long as they’re primed for September and finals action. Hopefully they’ve learnt that from last season.

Melbourne are no longer a great team - they are just bog average

re: Tom Scully: “Although the move was a negative one for Melbourne, it was a positive for the 24-year-old, whose game flourished into elite magnificence in orange colours.”

No it hasn’t. Scully has started well this year but his GWS career has been a massive disappointment considering the money he is on. Actually, not even considering the money he is on.

The No.1 picks who have lifted the competition's standard

This is quite bizarre. Melbourne ranked lower than the team they beat, a touted potential finalist. And lower than Brisbane who were thrashed by 60 points. Whattha?

AFL power rankings: Round 1

The cultural issue applied 3-5 years ago but not anymore. Roos has not been the messiah in drastically changing results but he has brought in real cultural change and levels of professionalism that didn’t exist under Neeld and Bailey. McCartney as Development Coach a massive plus as well in terms of young players developing and gaining belief in themselves and with each other. As I’ve said below, the foundation has been set for a bright future but its too early in 2016 for finals, etc.

Dees supporter myself. While I expect improvement and less blow-out losses, I can’t see us getting near the 8 in 2016 with a number of teams just above us or likely to improve as well so 12th-13th sounds about right. But the big thing I’m hoping for is another 20 odd games playing together for the likes of Hogan, Gawn, Viney, Tyson, Salem, Brayshaw, etc which should lay a very good foundation for 2017 and beyond.

Yeah I quite like the idea of one round a year being played at traditional grounds. Heritage Round would be most appropriate with games at Princess Park, Punt Road, Junction Oval, etc. Probably won’t ever happen though.

The danger of nostalgia; the beauty of suburban footy

Good summary I reckon. Particularly as fantasy team selections come to the fore.

Agree wholeheartedly on the prospects for big Maxxy Gawn as well. But the Dees haven’t played an intra-club game yet. First one tomorrow morning.

The Christmas wish list for 2015

Indeed. But also free from injury and suspensions.

The Christmas wish list for 2015

1. My beloved Melbourne Demons cracking the finals for first time in nearly a decade
2. Selectors sticking with Burns and Khawaja
3. Essendon drugs saga to finally be over one way or the other
4. Johnno Thurston to just keep doing what he does for the Cowboys and the Maroons
5. Qld Reds to improve and perhaps fill Suncorp once or twice
6. Brisbane Heat having a win on the 29th Dec so my boy can finally experience a win
7. To get the rub of the green in any form of fantasy sports I participate in
8. Russia banned from international athletics after their state-sponsored doping program
9. Sepp Blatter jailed
10. Socceroos cruise through World Cup qualifying

What do you reckon? I’ve been a good boy Santa. Not asking for much am I?

The Christmas wish list for 2015

Small error. The Melbourne ‘Skills Stadium disaster’ led to the sacking of Dean Bailey as coach. Not Mark Neeld.

James Hird is gone, and he shouldn't be the last

A touch of realism wouldn’t go astray. And some common sense. But the underlying criticism is there is no argument or justification for how any of the proposed changes will actually benefit/save the game. It’s nothing but a wish list.

My 10-year, 10-point plan to save the AFL

Hogan ‘doesn’t show second efforts’. Guess there’s not much need when you’re ranked third for contested marks in the comp. Ahead of Cloke, Riewoldt and Kennedy. Not bad for a first year player.

The 2015 AFL Rising Star is a two-horse race

Hogan for sure. Some very good young players coming through but no-one else has beaten established and proven players like Hogan. His demolition of Rance was something special. And as the article says, in a much harder position than the dime-a-dozen midfield types.
